It isn't any of those.

Are you getting any sound at all? Sometimes no icon means your sound driver didn't load and Puppy thinks you have a soundless computer.

I'm not in Puppy right now, but open up the sound wizard under setup and see what it says. Try the multiple sound card button and see if you see your sound card.

Yes. Sound works fine. Except I want to be able to adjust the system volume. Every Puppy and Dog Linux I've ever used had a volume control. Don't know why xenialpup64-7.5-uefi.iso doesn't.

If sound is actually working in Xenialpup64 7.5
There should be a icon on the tray for volume control.

If you just installed Xenialpup64 7.5
I would completely uninstall it.
Download a fresh Xenialpup64 7.5.iso.
Do a completely new install of it.

Downloads and installs sometimes do not go perfect.
root# retrovol
Segmentation fault
root#
That indicates something not correct with the install.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

It sounds retrovol is not installed.

-Type ppm in console, and type retrovol in the "search" field of Puppy Package Manager.
-You will see :"retrovol-0.13.1-x86_64"
-Auto install or step by step.

Edit: I just see the bigpup's post.
The best thing to do after all. Good luck!

If retrovol wasn't installed at all, it would be some sort of "file not found" error.

I'd try to redownload next, if only to eliminate a bad download as the cause.

Attached is the GtkHash of the xenialpup64-7.5-uefi.iso I downloaded.

It matches the GtkHash at the download site:

Code: Select all

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-xenial/64/xenialpup64-7.5-uefi.iso.md5&sha256.txt
Ubuntu Xenial 64	64-bit	XenialPup64 7.5
# MD5
4502bb9693bd72fb5dcfb86a2ce8255d xenialpup64-7.5-uefi.iso
# SHA1
b5553e7291e6cac1f08af124b6ef1b47b46a7325 xenialpup64-7.5-uefi.iso
# SHA256
c27fe4eebd5101627a8787e91b067f28390f41fdb66a55ffee2777b72558368a xenialpup64-7.5-uefi.iso
... so the problem was not a download error.

Here's how I installed it:

Code: Select all

1) make a folder named Xpup64 in sda3/
2) extract files from ISO to /sda3/Xpup64
3) add a boot entry in /sda1/menu.lst
Here's the step[3] boot menu entry:

Code: Select all

title Xpup64 xenialpup64-7.5-uefi.iso
rootnoverify (hd0,2)
kernel /Xpup64/vmlinuz pmedia=atahd psubdir=Xpup64
initrd /Xpup64/initrd.gz
I am going to try booting without the savefile to see if the speaker icon magically appears... will post again with results of that effort

See my reply to bigpup. GtkHash of my downloaded ISO matches GtkHash at the download site.

I'm going to try booting without my savefile, to see if there's something in the savefile that's causing the problem... will post again with outcome of that test...

It's the savefile (actually save folder).

Without it, there's a speaker icon. With it, there's no speaker icon.

How could the save folder cause this, and what's the process for fixing the save folder? I went to a lot of trouble to create and configure it.
