Which Puppy for Asus EeePC?

#1 Post by fishmanluvslinux »

Ok yall. I am trying to use an ASUS EeePC 900HD for an email, book reading and surfing type of machine to carry around. This machine is on the second owner and the first didn't use it but twice. Fluppy did work really good but I am not sure if it is still supported. LOL! Any suggestions on which Puppy would be best for this project? I sure would appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Fish

I own two EeePCs, a 700 (512MB RAM) and a 1000HE (2GB RAM). The 700 struggles with browsers, but does run with Slacko-5.7.2. The 1000HE skips along quite happily with Dpup Stretch 7.5, and I've recently upgraded it to Buster 8.0.

I see the 900HD comes with 1GB RAM, which might still run Dpup Stretch, but you might want to stick with a lightweight browser; there are several to choose from, although some websites prefer a full-fat browser. Book reading should be OK, although large books might be slow to open. For application recommendations, please let us know the book file format(s) (.epub, .pdf or whatever). For email, a portable Thunderbird should do the job nicely (and saves hassle if you decide to change the distro at any point).

Slacko-5.7.2:

Dpup Stretch:

Thunderbird:

I suggest you give these a go and let us know how you get on. :)

For the 1000HE/900HD there is AtomicPup-19

The 1st post describing "whats in there" is here.

Should be OK for most needs.

I use ScPup 32 bit on my Acer Aspire One AO150, Intel Atom N270 CPU
at 1.6 gHz, 1 gig RAM, 120 gig HD, "frugal" installation sharing the HD
with WinXP SP3. I chose Palemoon as my browser of choice, have had
very few problems, all of which have been solved.

Meaning, am I still using them? Well, I haven't looked at the 700 for a while but I still use the 1000HE regularly, with Iron browser loaded on the fly (see http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=105533). Iron is fine for most purposes, but I prefer to read my emails in Thunderbird as it's easier on the RAM.

If you're meaning something else, could you elaborate please?

I use Puppy528 on my EeePC 701 and it works great.
I have my EeePC and my desktop PC set up so that they have the same icons in the same place.
I did a frugal install onto a USB hard drive. It may not be fast to boot but it meant I didn't change the OS the EeePC came with.
Some time in the distant future, I intend to publish my version I created from 528.
If you go with 528 feel free to come back here with any suggestions. I can't guarantee I will put it in or even that I will continue to work on the project but at least I'd give it 60:40 odds.
