Linux

#1 Post by labbe5 »

Hi,

An article from Business Week, January 31, 2005 sums up what is Lunix for new comers to the operating system. 7 pages in all. The title : Linux Inc. by Steve Hamm. The article is centered around Linus Torvalds, founder of Linux, his life and work, and his positive impact on software development. Even big business is onboard, such as IMB, HP, collaborating on kernel development. As a result, supercomputers are mostly on Linux. Interesting reading for anyone wanting to learn more about Linus Torvalds and his achievements, creating what became known as Linux, benefiting millions around the world.
In 2014, the battleground is still winning over Windows users that are unaware that a free alternative exists.
Personnally, i take every opportunity to make clear that Linux is better in terms of cost-benefit, stability, choice of software. But it is an uphill battle, no argument can sway them to change. Them being friends and relatives. People that don't have special needs : surfing the web, mostly.
Old habits die hard.

Also, people don't have to be aware of Linux or open-source in order to be Linux users.

For an example, recently I bought wireless router, it runs on Linux. I also bought one Samsung phone and Samsung tablet, the both run on Android. Although with Android it depends on whether or not it should be thought by us as Linux.

In my case, I was aware of the Operating Systems, but even if I weren't the devices would operate the same.

FSFE welcomes CDU decision to make Free Software mandatory
"The open and jointly developed standards of the Internet and open interfaces are the principles from which we advance the digitisation of Germany. It is only through openness that competition can be created; only through openness can new players in competition challenge the top dogs. This is why the following will apply to all (public) digitisation projects in Germany in the future: the awarding of contracts and funding will be subject to compliance with the principles of open source and open standards. Software financed by public funds should serve all citizens. In addition, free and open APIs should facilitate access for independent developments."
