How create Windows 7 USB based installer from W7 iso?

#1 Post by B.K. Johnson »

Hello all
I don't know where to place this ... hope it's the right place to get an answer. Chris, where are you?

I needed to repair a Windows 7 netbook which was infected with a rootkit malware. I found I had the same virus when I booted into my XP after 3 years. I can't re-install W7 on the netbook - it doesn't have optical disk drive. I don't want to use my infected XP with Windows software lest I transfer the virus to the new W7 installation. So I need to do everything from puppy.

I made an ISO from the Windows 7 disk using dd. Now I need to create an installer that will be USB based from the iso. How can I do that? Do I just copy the iso files and set the boot flag?

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Go back.
Format the USB as FAT32 and make bootable.
Copy the files from the W7 ISO to the USB.
Edit the boot.ini file to run SETUP from the USB - it should already do so but.....

Boot to the USB

Windows 7 will not run from USB without special work arounds.
