Connect Samsung GT-S5830i phone to Xenial64-7.5 laptop?

#1 Post by LeithR »

I am exploring how to update the OS on my mobile phone from Gingerbread to Jellybean. I have copies of the appropriate .zip files ready to copy onto my phone but when I try to connect the phone to my laptop I get the following :-

Phone connected directly to USB port - phone indicates its connected by USB, however the laptop doesn't see the phone and using gparted, it sees the phone as SDB1 but when selected a msge comes up indicating there is no medium.

Connecting SD card directly to laptop I get the same messages.

Further exploration indicates that there may be differences in how Xenial and Samsung format SD cards.

My question is - how do I successfully connect my phone to my laptop please?

Hi Leithr
When I was using Xenial64-7.5 all I needed to do was connect my
Note 8 via the USB port on my Laptop. A dialog box would pop up asking if I wanted to connect my phone also the phone would ask if it was alright to allow this computer to access the Filesystem.
Yes a lot newer phone running Android Pie a lot newer operating system.

Try this reboot the computer and then before you connect your phone go to the menu click on Filesystem then click on connect your Android Phone.
Then following the instructions on the popup window that displays.

Again in my case I plug in the phone and the software starts automatically.
Hopefully by you starting the software first then plunging the phone all will work.

If not then I am guessing that the Android operating system is too old and not
compatible with the linux program.

There is other software provided by a member of this forum. That is designed
to do what you want. Maybe that software will work. Unfortunately I do not
remember his Screen Name or the name of the software. Hopefully he will also
answer your question

Best Regards
John

On my Android phone.
I have to go into phone settings->USB connection
It has listed several different types of connections depending on what you are trying to do over the USB.

Choosing the correct one for what you are doing seems to let Puppy Linux access the phones internal storage.

I suggest setup the phone and hook it to the computer.
Then boot Xenialpup.

Thanks Both for your responses.
@Bigpup - I tried what you suggested without success. I got a USB icon on my phone and switched it on which made no difference.

@Packetteer - followed you instructions and came up with Broadcom BCM12553 Thunderbird detected, the message allowed me to switch on deny or test so I elected to go for Test and received the message MTPTest - detect failed no MTP device found.

Found a link to Broadcom BCM12553 download for Windows but so far no reference on Puppy Linux forum.

Connecting SD card directly to laptop I get the same messages.

That would suggest that the SD card itself is corrupted.

I would reformat it in Gparted and start again.

Went thru the similar experience trying to download jpg files from my P4 to my main PC. After failing using usb connection I am getting good results using gftp.

Get the phone ip address/port, for me anonymous with blank pass FTP setting works every time. Once decide the local and phone folder u can save it as a bookmark which makes it quick. You have the option of deleting the files after download of course.

From the manual for your Samsung GT-S5830i phone :
PC connections
Learn to connect your device to a PC with a USB cable in
various USB connection modes. By connecting the device
to a PC, you can transfer data to and from your device
directly and use the Samsung Kies program.

Connect with Samsung Kies
Ensure that Samsung Kies is installed on your PC. You can
download the program from the Samsung website
(www.samsung.com/kies).
1
Using a USB cable, connect the multifunction jack on
your device to a PC.
Samsung Kies will launch automatically.
If Samsung Kies does not automatically launch,
double-click the Samsung Kies icon on your PC.
2
Copy files from the PC to the phone.
Refer to the Samsung Kies help for more informatio
This probably is saying they use a special format that is not read by anything other than this Samsung program.
Format the memory card
Formatting your memory card on a PC may cause
incompatibilities with your device. Format the memory
card only on the device.
In Idle mode, select

storage
Unmount SD card

Format SD card
Erase everything.

Before formatting the memory card, remember to
make backup copies of all important data stored on
your device. The manufacturer's warranty does not
cover loss of data resulting from user actions

Sorry, I've been busy with other things since yesterday.
Right, I bought another SD card and formatted it on the phone then tried to move and copy both root.zip and the jellybean package (Jellyblast) onto the card directly from my laptop to the SD card.
Both of these attempts came up saying that the card was read only and wouldn't copy. How can the SD card be read-only? However when I try to mount the SD card whilst inside the phone I get a failure message on the laptop.
With the sd card which was in the phone before I started this project, the laptop doesn't see it initially but sees it in Gparted but comes up with this msg "Input/output error during read on /dev/sdb". Seems my plan to upgrade my phone is going nowhere fast.

Anybody got another suggestion?[/quote]

Hi there rcrsn51, thanks for responding, how should I format it? I don't mean the mechanics of how to do it but what features.

When you open the device in Gparted, does it show you the current filesystem? If so, reformat it in the same filesystem.

However, if the phone is formatting the card in something like exfat, you will have a problem.

You could try formatting the card as fat32 or ntfs. Hopefully the phone can read them.

Right, gave that a go and Gparted came up with msge "Can't write to mmcblk0p1 because it is open read only.

Tried ignoring this in Gparted but that didn't work. How do I overcome the read only issue?

Do you have this card in an SD carrier? Is the carrier in the "Lock" position?

Yes, I'm using an SD carrier and no it doesn't have a lock facility on it, altho it may have had one, I think there is a slot for one.

Is it possibly the permissions? on the sd card I'm seeing 3 folders which were set up by the phone during the formatting of the sd card. They are:-
Android with permissions rwx,r-x,r-x/---
DCIM rwr,r-x,r-x/---
LOST.DIR rwr,r-x,r-x/---
The other set up features showing in Gparted are:-
partition /dev/mmcblk0p1
File system fat32
size 32.25GiB
Used 62.46MiB
Unused 31.19GiB boot, lba

I think I'm going to to have to shelve this project for a while, I've ordered another 64GiB card and carrier.

I next plan to format the new card on the laptop - I was thinking about recreating the folders but don't think that would work as there are some files seem to have associated actions.

Any comment you have on that approach would be appreciated.

@bigpup,
Thanks, yes I read your earlier comment. I've been working through options, so far I can't find a source for kies on puppy linux or even kies for linux. Still looking, do you know of a source please?
