I used a sledgehammer on a HDD, and was astonished at how tough it was. I've found it's better to go buy the proper size Torx screwdriver and take the hard disk apart, dismount the platters and then bend, scratch and break them up. dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda In regards to using dd to wipe disks......

Could we return to a text-based interface?
I spent most of the day yesterday cutting a hard-drive Puppy installation down to a meager size of 16 megabytes in order to trim the fat off of a little utility I have that simply boots up so that it can change the graphics mode of my Asus Eeepc. I found it really delightful to work with the command...

Re: What will Linux become?
...when I became a self-made millionaire. ... Puppy is one of the coolest toys I've seen in a long, long time. It got me going down a road I haven't traveled in many years. Barry has done a great job building a gismo and it's one that can be used for practical purposes. Unfortunately few of the one...

If I type geany it opens. If I type in geany filename.txt, it does nothing. I had to code my own little text editor for Linux. I found nothing that was satisfactory out there, and it's pretty easy to toss together a little program using Tcl/tk's text widget tool. Writing is such a central part of w...

Wow... I didn't mean to make you get on your knees and beg forgiveness! It was only four words, after all! It is a feature. I am very familiar with this retort, which is thrown out whenever someone new comes in and begins inferring that he thinks that things ought to be done differently than folks h...

Re: What will Linux become?
Hi, Bernie by the Sea! Total nonsense. Why, what a retort! You have a lot of interesting and cool ideas, but you seem like quite the frosty individual on the internet, so I really don't have a desire to chat with you. Sad you didn't approach the converation with a bit more humility. We could have a ...

I did finally get acpi_call.ko properly built and installed... and I learned that through it, I have all the functions that the Asus Graphics Switcher offers on my Eeepc 1015pn . I'm quite satisfied now. I even was able to cut down a version of Puppy to install on a harddrive that allows me to do a ...

Thanks for your help. I see what happens using the Open Box Window Manager. That's quite a measured movement from one screen to the next. It reminds me of using Compiz and navigating a desktop wall. In Joe's Window Manager, the controls are much more hot. That's what I'm concerned about. I mean, it ...

Dragging windows until they loop to the other side
Is there any way to make the windows on the new Puppy stop at the side of the screen when you drag them, rather than looping around to the other side? On a small screen, it can get quite dizzying.

Oh.. Duh! I see what you're saying. Yes, it is possible to do that, but it isn't Puppy that will get the computer going for you. In order for it to work your motherboard's BIOS has to have what's known as a RTC Real time Clock Alarm system. Check your motherboard manual to see if you have that optio...

The touchpad works, right? However, it's a pain not to be able to turn it off and on, though - is what you're saying? I'm still working on that with my brand new computer - an Asus Eeepc - which has an Elantech, rather than a Synaptics touchpad A quick Google search tells me that your laptop has an ...

I frankly think that performance and bloat lie in opposite directions on the scale. When a manufacturer or tech support person say that you need such and such hardware to run such and such thing... they have in mind a particular operating system, which has its own unique characteristics. Windows 98 ...
