SOLVED -- savefile error with Slacko 5.4
Background: I had been using Slacko 5.3, and found on moving to 5.4 that the periodic saving to savefile process took absolutely ages. Sometimes it would use 100% CPU for over 2 minutes. I reinstalled using the PAE build and the problem is cured. Since my savefile was 4GB I think that the problem ...

Slacko 5.4 on ASUS K52F
When I used to run Ubuntu, I managed to alter some settings in Gnome that eventually got Skype to have the video the right way up.
Trouble is, with Puppy, its a whole other different set of software.
Does anyone with an ASUS laptop know how to get around this issue?

Installing via the command line
I'm trying to take my understanding of Slacko to the next level, and one thing I'd like to be able to do is fetch and install packages via the command line.
I am used to Debian based "apt-get install" type stuff.
What is the Slacko equivalent please?

Downloads bar in Chromium has gone wrong
Please see attached screenshot.
I don't WHAT has happened. Changing GTK theme, Chrome theme and OpenBox theme does not seem to make any difference.
Related question: why does Lucid 528.005 have 3 window managers, and if I'm set on OpenBox, how do I get rid of the others?

Pidgin Buddy List Keeps Popping Up
Rather annoyingly, whenever certain changes are being made to the system, the buddy list keeps popping up (having previously been confined to tray). Is this a side-effect of the system reloading the WM or something?
Anyone else had this happen to them, and/or know how to stop it, please?

I want to be able to change the default filemanager, terminal and browser. I've followed various suggestions on these forums, and even downloaded tools that are supposed to set the defaults, but anomalous behaviour is still occurring. I'm beginning to wonder if, in the absence of an integrated DE ...

How do I change default applications in Lucid Pup 528.005
Both Slacko 5.3 and 5.4 had a menu option to change default applications.
I can't find anything similar for Lucid.
Help please.

Saving from RAM to Savefile takes way longer than 5.3
I'm been experiencing a problem that is not in the notes, which is that the savefile seems to take 10-20x longer to save than with 5.3. - mainly the one that happens periodically, not just on shutdown. Shutdown I don't care about and I think even on 5.3 it takes longer on shutdown than the periodic ...

I moved from Slacko 5.3 to 5.4 and now have more problems
Background: I decided to install 5.4 because of a problem I had previously had on 5.3 where the X Server kept crashing at random. I was advised that 5.4 had more support for Intel graphics cards, and so I downloaded the 5.4 ISO, burnt it, booted into it, and burned the ISO to USB. I am now running ...

OK I installed a clean full version of Slacko 5.4 and so far the X Windows has not crashed. However, I now have other problems with permissions on NTFS drives, and the INCREDIBLY slowness of the savefile being written from RAM to disk. Previously it took 10-20 seconds. Now it takes forever. I am ...

My X Server keeps crashing
OK so at seemingly random times, sometimes while running apps, othertimes during periods of inactivity, the X Server goes away and I am left staring at a command prompt. I have no idea of how to begin to troubleshoot this, and could really use some help. I am using Slacko 5.3 on an ASUS A52F. Ran ...

Can't get rid of a file - deleted file keeps coming back!
OK so here's the problem. There is an AVI file in the root of my file system. As in, it's not in any folder, just there with all the other highest level folders. So there is /bin, /usr, /opt etc and then of course some .pet.specs and other bits and pieces, and this AVI. I think it first arrived ...
