WAG-0.2.2.pup Wireless Access Gadget
Made a few minor improvements over 0.2.1, mainly to make scanning for networks easier. Just two clicks to connect to any open network. The biggest change is installation: I finally got around to making a dotpup that auto-installs to the roxapps folder.
I've been releasing a new version a day, and I think that's over. I'm happy with the interface and everything works. It will be a few weeks until version 0.3.0 comes out.
Has anyone had success with WAG? I know there have only been about a dozen downloads so far, but most of the downloads were the completely broken first version. Kind of surprised no one said anything about it....

There is nothing I can see that says in plain language what it is or what it does or what it's for. Maybe no one has downloaded it because they can't tell they need it. Peppyy, I see no reason why it wouldn't work on older versions of puppy. It should at least load no matter what. Scaning really just comes down to features supported by your wireless card. I assumed you configured as per the instructions in the README?

And here is the section on what to do if it doesn't work:Shift left click on the WAG icon to open (not run) the Rox App.
Shift left click on the script called AppRun to open in a text editor.
Near the top you will see 'User Configured Data'.
Set CARDSOC to the socket number your Wifi card uses (usually 0 or 1).
Set WLAN to the name of your Wifi card (usually wlan0, eth0, ath0).
If you have to load a (single) module such as ndiswraper, enter its name
in MODDATA.
Set WIFIIP to your preference of IP address. It will be used whenever
possible.
Finally, there is a user customizable button in the WAG interface.
When clicked, it will run a script in the WAG directory called 'manuwifi'.
By default the button is called 'User Script' and the script contains a
template for connecting to a single encrypted access point. However, it
can also be used to store a single gateway and DNS configuration.
I did post screenshots, back on the release of WAG-0.2.0, so they are now a little dated. They are still relivant, just not entirely accurate.WAG may not work with you wireless card or drivers. It was written
by one guy with one PCMCIA card and three different drivers, so it is
likely to not work for you. If WAG doesn't work, or presents you with
incorrect diagnostic information, first check to make sure you properly
entered your configuration. You didn't make any mistakes, you'll need to
post some information in the Puppy Linux forum. Tell me what was
supposed to happen and what actually happened. Tell me what you must
type in manually to form a connection. Mention what you have set the user
variables to. What do you have in rc.local to make wifi work? Most
importantly, open the WAG folder and run the 'debug' script. It will
generate a file (debug.txt) that I must have in order to make WAG work
for you.

But install text has some problems.
First, I think you need to insert lines:
as the first lines of the body of dotpup.sh
'Cause when I first installed the dotpup, I got nothing. I don't think the -f option of cp actually creates the directories if they are not already there.
Second, you need to move the version info from the top of README to the bottom, so that what first pops up are the config instructions. As it is, if you don't know what to look for, that first README screen brought up by xmessage looks like it is complete--until you see the scroll bar on the right side. So you just hit "okay" without figuring out anything! With other dotpups most of us are used to stuff showing up in the Start menu (first place I looked was Start/Network), and we don't know where to look for this. (Can't count on us to go back and read all of the forum posts!) Even better would be to have the install stick an icon in Start/Network, but you might want to wait until it's working a little better first.
At this point, I would alter the README slightly to make things more clear. In addition to moving the version info to the end, how about starting with:

Unfortunately, my neighbor's AP seems to be down right now, so I haven't been able to test other functionality, but it connects me to mine right away. I'll take it out sometime and try some more, but I think it can be a really helpful tool.
Edit: now 3 neighbors have AP's up, but only 1 is open and I'm not getting an IP address. Still, this is good. I'll try some more stuff when I get a chance. Nice work so far, though!

All I can get no matter how I click on it is the following in beaver.
I downloaded an older version WAG-0.2.1.gz and although it had some errors I was able to get it to start. That one will give me an xmessage box with option buttons and the following.
I guess since puppy sees my orinoco as eth0 it must treat it as a wired network card?

You can use eth0 with WAG, just have to reconfigure.

I've implemented moritzes's suggestions. I'm also working on Bladehunter's recommendation - pulling the wireless interface from /proc/net/wireless

Ok, I created the directorys and ran the latest version. Read the xmessage.
I did not have a WAG icon. I had AppRun, debug and manuwifi, debug.txt and display.txt in the directory WAG but nothing in my-roxapps eccept the directory I made. I restarted and there it was.Try running it by left-clicking on the WAG icon in /root/my-roxapps

Your "directory" WAG is probably a ROX application. (Right-click the icon and select "info" to check.) It would look like an application if you assign the /root/my-roxapps/WAG/.DirIcon to it. (Don't miss the "." in that address; the icon is hidden.) [Need to fix that in the pupget.sh, keenerd. Nice icon BTW]
At any rate, even if assigning the icon somehow doesn't work, left-click AppRun to run the program. (First modify the AppRun text as mentioned above, of course.) What do you get? If you get an xmessage and some choices, try the scan button and see if you can see all the nearby networks. You are very close, I think.

Wow, I can not make a roxapp to save my life. I (thoroughly!) looked over everything, and the only flaws I could find were making the WAG folder a second time instead of creating the help folder. I also had a typo which excluded the (unused) autowifi script from the dotpup. I had zero trouble with the icon.
Until I learn to take my time, it looks like this will always be a buggy beta.

I must still be doing something wrong or my card is not supported. I tried it on another running ndiswrapper with a linksys, a gigabyte and an oriunoco a/b and I couldn't get it to see those either even though they were connected.

I've made a slew of small improvements. Increased speed, decreased disk access, and a much more user friendly installation process. The wireless interface is detected automatically. There is even an included mini-utility to help determine which socket you are using. Basically, the dotpup does much more handholding than ever before. And the installer is (finally) bug free.
Oh, Peppyy, it sounds like you didn't enter the socket number of your wifi card. Previously, you've said you use socket 1, and the WAG default is socket 0. One other thing: You have three wireless cards!? Could you please run the debug script in the WAG folder once for each card and send me the results? I need to see how a variety of cards function.

I haven't had a chance to really stress test it, but the new install works nicely.
You might want to have the script check for "manuwifi" and offer to copy it if present (assuming that there will be more upgrades on the program). It's not hard to recreate it, but probably not hard to store it, either.

I am on the 770z with the orinoco classic gold card and it sees the connection now but still dosn't treat it as wireless. Won't scan with this card. I tried the new one on the 600e with the linksys wpc11 v4 running wifi-pup and it found my network and my neighbors too. I could not however connect to either one as dhcp wouldn't work. It also reported signal at 0/100. I will try another card and see what happens on the E when I get a few minutes. Running 1.0.3 on this one still.
