Re: puppy 4.31 glibc 2.19
Thanks Tanker it makes me feel very chuffed that it is of use to someone and here we are 10 years on from when 4.31 was created and it is still of use.https://distrowatch.com/?newsid=05720tanker60 wrote:posting from puppy 4.31 glibc 2.19. runs well on my hp invent amd athlon tm dual core

4.31 glibc 2.19& html 5 video
is it possible to get html 5 working. palemoon 27.9.4 and seamonkey 2.46 can run
html 5. it's not working so has to be something missing in the 4.31 system.

I have found some videos in Seamonkey work and some don't. Here is one that does.tanker60 wrote:is it possible to get html 5 working. palemoon 27.9.4 and seamonkey 2.46 can run

MMmm Yes Palemoon isn't doning Html at youtube so using the seamonkey 2.46 from menu-internet Seamonkey2.46 is the one to use to make it default edit the Browse Icon and have the following entry
To do this right click on desktop browse Icon and left click on Browse - open as text, make changes as above and save them.
P.s. There is a left over old Seamonkey that should have been deleted by Seamonkey so it is imortant to use the later 2.46 Seamonkey from menu/internet Seamonkey 2.46.
When next version of 4.31 Phoenix is done I'll delete it. Its in /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey.
Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/local/seamonkey/seamonkey "$@"

Hallo, Darren.
Now, then; what's the current state of play with this? I fancy giving this a try on ye anciente Dell, see if I can speed things up a tad.
I've currently got Raring and Precise running on here, installed to the SSD. Precise is a bit sprightlier than Raring, which itself ain't too bad speed-wise.
I've got a bit confused, reading the previous posts, as to how you try this out. Do I understand correctly, that you have to install this first, before trying it out.....like, say, a frugal straight to USB? No 'Live-CD', is that right?
I'll probably do a quick'n'dirty, anyway.
----------------------------------
Palemoon 27.9.4_sse runs OK, yes? I might use my portable version.....we'll see.
Is MikeB's 431 stuff still available......and, more importantly, does it run with this any longer, having upgraded the glibc? Or can we actually run more up to date stuff now? (Ooh, please say 'Yes'..! )
------------------------------------
That's enough questions for now! I'll leave those with you, OK? Oh; while I think of it, you say PSIP 1.4.2's behaving itself on here? I'm wondering, y'see; it's entirely possible the portable packages I assembled for Smokey's BackSeatDriver may work, too; it uses 1.4.2. Perhaps not the AppImages, but I think definitely the self-extracting scripts ought to... Worth a try, anyhow, I reckon.
I'll take a crack at this, let ya know what happens.
Mike.

Yes Psip was updated as I included necessary openssl libs. Watchdog told me old one wasn't working anymore that came with original 4.31 also updated deadbeef to 0.7.2.Mike Walsh wrote:Hallo, Darren.

I have noticed Palemoon 27.9.4SSE was no longer doing HTML5 would love this to be solved. As stated seamonkey 2.46 from the menu does play HTML5. from youtube.

I have a plm-28.6.1-p4.sfs which use a chroot jail from precise which works to play streams and youtube. If someone is interested I can share it. It's 200 Mb large.
I'm using the very first release of this derivative with my customizations: I have problems with further releases. With the last release I have a Kernel Panic when I boot with a pupsave loading. I think too many changes to the original puppy 4.31.

@ watchdog:-
Per your 'chrooted' Palemoon as mentioned above, I'd be very interested to try it out in this 431 're-visited'..! I just prefer Palemoon; I'm not a fan of SeaMonkey, I'm afraid!
--------------------------
@ Darren:-
Just FYI, a few things I've found work OK in your upgraded 431.
Jake (SFR)'s Lockstate and MagDock both work flawlessly.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=957170 - Lockstate
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=115930 - MagDock
Barry's EasyDD utility which I packaged up does as well, but 'pup-dialog' is required.....and possibly 'pupmessage', too..? Not certain about this second one.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=116481
And the tiny VideoView webcam app (which watchdog put me onto 2-3 yrs ago) also works. Interesting, this one, because my Logitech c920 HD Pro wasn't built till 3 or 4 years after this was released.....but because it's UVC-compliant, that's why it runs without issue, because VideoView supports the UVC kernel driver module. And that's been in the kernel for a long time.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=112299
(This one's so small it's attached to the thread itself, so you can d/l it from the forum. Even recording works!)
------------------------
And finally, a question of my own. Can somebody please explain to me how you use Xine to watch videos....'cos I've never been able to figure it out!
I can get 'em to start, but nothing ever shows on the screen.....
EDIT:- Correction; it plays DVDs from the optical drive fine. However, I can't figure out how to get it to play back videos from the hard drive?
Help would be appreciated.
Mike.

pup 4.31 glibc 2.19 no html 5 video
did some testing.if you run palemoon 27.9.4 or seamonkey 2.46 . in any of the new
puppies. html 5 video works ok. but will not run in pup 4.31, racy 5.5, precise 5.6.
so the problem is not the browser. something in the old puppies is not letting html 5
work. what it is i don't have a clue. as my skills are poor at best.

I can in fact run both 28.6.1 and 27.9.4 in Racy 5.5, and I do have YouTube running fine in both.....but then, I've modified Racy so much over the last few years I wouldn't even know where to start looking for the 'magic bullet'.
I guess battleshooter's 'glibc-2.20 upgrade' must have something to do with that.....and the ffmpeg packages Fredx181 found a while back have, I think, played a part, too.

Mm. Well, now.....
Xine definitely needs experimentation to get the best out of it. I'm slowly starting to get the hang of it. It certainly works - I'm now getting stuff playing from the hard drive - but it's quite fussy & 'picky' when it comes to the containers/codecs it's happy to work with. And despite Xine and GXine both using the same 'engine' (libxine) this doesn't always seem to translate directly from one to t'other, as you might expect.
Certain MP4s it'll turn its nose up at, yet others play without a murmur of protest. And I must admit, it seems pretty good with some of the more esoteric formats; FLV, MOV, AVI, OGG, etc. Doesn't like WebM, naturally, but that's common to many of the older Linux media players.....it's a relatively modern format, after all.
Ah, well; back to the 'laboratory'..!!

Interesting on Tanker's machine Seamonkey won't play html5 but on mine it does.
Palemoon doesn't - Mike do you think this is an ffmpeg issue I updated ffmpeg from Shinobar as well as xine-lib and xine-ui they were all Shinobar updates here:
http://shinobar.server-on.net/puppy/pup4/opt/pets/
namely ffmpeg 20100408
and Xine-lib 1.1.19-full from that page with xine-ui .pet and it plays most of the mp4's I throw at it from mp4's downloaded by clipgrab.
