fat -free-pup version using 2.17 core 52.9MB
fat-free-pup is just what the name says a stock puppy with many apps removed
no scripts were changed so no added problems either
The reason why the fat-free-pup came about
with the many upgrades and version changes puppylinux needs
to be reinstalled many times to keep up with the new progress
if you have dial-up a large iso is all day to download if you are happy with your puppy linux version but just want the new browsers when they come out and other programs that change frequently I removed them so they are not permanent
you can upgrade them without a total reinstall now with the new version 3 puppylinux it will take time to iron out the new glitches ( I looked over the new packages in version 3 and I say about 60% of the packages have been upgraded and a different kernel and scripts and also xvesa and xorg to name a few ) and I welcome the good things that come from version 3 I already use the new browsers
and hope to have the benifits of slackware packages thats a big plus
I have a fat-free-pup for version 3 in the making I have the packages sorted already and when all the reports come back with what works and what needs to be adjusted I will build the iso for me to test I'll keep you posted
I continue to use fat-free-pup as my main and only OS
another link thanks to caneri
http://www.puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/custom
during the build puppy is hard coded for many defaults such as the default browser even though seamonkey was not used it is still seen as default by puppy not my doing thats just the way it was made but it is easily changed manually in /usr/local/bin right click default bowser open it as text then change the word
#!/bin/sh
exec firefox "$@"
thats if you want firefox .Seamonkey will just work as default after it is installed with pet-get
then once firefox is running you could go to edit >preferences> and paste this as the home page http://www.puppylinux.com/

Important update ! do you want the new firefox for version 3 puppylinux came out yesterday ? well I have excellent news for you fat-free-pup has no browser so the new version 3 puppylinux pet works fine with fat-free and it auto adds to the menu I am using it now
1.)install a temporary browser of your choice with pet-get
2.) then use one of the new version 3 pets from the official puppylinux site

Might I suggest a very small addition to this version and that is an editor that you can use when X is not working.
I always have to edit xorg.conf to get X working properly so an editor that can be used from the command line is important. I did see that ed was included but do not know how to use it. The books I have describe it as obsolete and pass on to the "modern" editors such as vi!
Perhaps e3 could be added?

@lobster i usually end up burning my cds at school so that mean using XP i haven't see an XP computer yet that does cd-rw without messing up the cd so i am gonna buy a 30 pack of cds for $6 not a bad price if i do say so myself

vanchutr,
thank you.
My problem is that i don't have a browser on this fat free version of puppy that can connect to the internet.
In command line, i type firefox, but still no browser will appear.
Right now i am using the 2.15CE. Maybe i could use this version to download such firefox-1.5.0.3.pet program.
Thank you again.
thank you.

no browser forced on you (thats the idea )
please dont expect a browser it was a lot of work to remove it
why? browsers are a personal choice I dont force my opion on you for a browser
some steps you should follow
1.) configure your firewall as usual
2.)set up your internet connection
3.)used the pet-get manager and install a browser
some things to think about (you decide)
if you want it easy select seamonkey
if you want fast and light use dillo
if you want opera or firefox you have to adjust the defaults
if you want chat install that too
if you need gxine there are some libs you can download with pet-get
gxine-0.5.9
xine_lib-1.1.4
xine_extra_codecs-1
they were removed because if you like mplayer or something else
that would be just extra bloat
fat-free-pup is complete enough that I used it to build fat-free-pup
and burn the iso from unleashed thats why I left the CD stuff there in the menu
so you can create what you want
if you dont feel comfortable doing that use puppylinx more time untill you feel comfortable with it then switch to fat-free-pup

Wow I wrote that before I'd ever tried using it. Its not exactly easy is it?HairyWill wrote:you learnt to use ed
Assuming that you have a second VT you might find it helpful to do
CTRL-ALT-F2
root
less -N my-file
so that you can see the entire file with line numbers and switch backwards and forwards with CTRL-ALT-F1 / CTRL-ALT-F2
Of course this assumes that fatfree has the less command.
I really should try it out shouldn't I.
Nice job. Great base to build upon (or not). I've been running 109CE, 213,215CE and 216EZ but thought this be just the thing for a fanless VIA 800 box I have. 216EZ runs a bit slow on that box so I wanted to upgrade it to "FatFree217". However. I think there must be a problem in the wlan setup (worked great with 216EZ) as I get device recognition and then the cpu runs so hard the clock updates about every 5 to 10 seconds, mouse is unusable and a reboot and skip of the check to see if the wlan is alive doesn't even make the system usable. I haven't tried the full 217 but guess the problem is really there.
Hopefully puppy 3.0.0 will play better with my H.W. and you will make a 'Fat Free' version of that.
Thanks,
KJ

Bare Bone style Puppys are very useful. I must admit I lean towards the Chubby style Puppys . . .
With Ezpup
and my evolving add on
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 859#126625
those people needing the lean with some selected add-ons (they can of course use the package installer) will be able to customise a useful Puppy breed of their own . .

Do you plan to create a Fat Free Puppy 3.0?
I could not put that into words so I am glad that you did
I saw that others had made reduced puppy derivatives but nobody made a newer version so I wanted it bad enough to build it myself
fat free 3 ( based on the official puppylinux 3.00) is out !
my friend ttuuxxx will be hosting it on his site for me
I just uploaded it so check at http://www.ttuuxxx.com for more info
its a little bigger because of the new xorg it is 62MB
If you need any help you can also find me on IRC #puppylinux chat
have fun build what you want
