After a bit of a struggle I was able to get Puppy performing very well for a few months on my 9 year old E-machine 400i. Last week it started to lock up or shutdown for no apparent reason and became difficult to reboot. Finally it would not reboot at all (not Puppy related) sometimes not even completing the BIOS check. A few days of troubleshooting and Memtest86 leads me to believe that my memory is failing. Either I can't load into memory or can't retain addresses. 9 years on a computer isn't a bad time span for the $ $ !
I am considering building a new computer if I don't find a "cheap" but suitable used machine. If building I would like to, if possible, re-use my recently purchased "upgraded" (relative to OEM E-machine 400i) ultra ata/100 hdd and Sony crx 230 cd.
I am looking for suggestions for an "economical" mobo/cpu suitable for my needs:
75% of my usage is dial-up web surfing & e-mail
some low level CAD (worked fine on my machine)
some image viewing
no gaming
no wifi
I know that everyone wants to suggest the latest, fastest, most powerful components but that is not what I want.
I need a Honda Civic, not a Ferrari!
Economical, basic and reliable.
