Resize personal Storage

#1 Post by n1n31nchn41l5 »

I have a lot of room left but cant open small .pets here is what i get - any ideas how to make it all into 1 save spot?????

Welcome to the Puppy Resize personal storage file utility!

Your personal file is msy_save-Muppy008.2fs, and this contains all of your data,
configuration files, email, newsgroup cache, history files, installed
packages and so on.

You have 1262 Mbytes free space left in msy_save-Muppy008.2fs,
out of a total size of 1359 Mbytes.

File msy_save-Muppy008.2fs is actually stored on partition sda1.
You have 0 Mbytes space left in sda1.

So, you need to make a decision. If you see that you are running
low on space in msy_save-Muppy008.2fs, you can make it bigger, but of
course there must be enough space in sda1.
Note, it was reported on the Forum that msy_save-Muppy008.2fs should not be
made bigger than 1.8GB, but I have yet to confirm this limitation.

PLEASE NOTE THAT AFTER YOU HAVE CLICKED A BUTTON BELOW,
NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. THE RESIZING WILL HAPPEN AT REBOOT.

Press a button to make msy_save-Muppy008.2fs bigger by that amount...
(note, this is one-way, you cannot make it smaller)

do i make: this 256MB and give all the rest of the room to: File msy_save-Muppy008.2fs is actually stored on partition sda1.
You have 0 Mbytes space left in sda1.

The message tells you that partition sda1 is full, thus you can't expand your pup_save file (unless you first make the partition itself larger).

But there is still plenty of room in your pup_save (1262 MB free out of a total of 1359 M). I wouldn't know why you can't open small pets, there must be some other reason. Maybe shortage of physical RAM (I assume you're running frugal), have a look at ramdisk partition with Menu > Filesystem > Partview. NB - I don't know if Partview is available in Muppy, I'm running pcPuppyOS now.

could it have anything to do with a msy_080.sfs and a msy_save-Muppy008.2fs being seperate files????

Should be okay. If I understand correctly (I'm no Muppy user myself; MU may confirm) msy_080.sfs corresponds to standard Puppy's pup_xxx.sfs while msy_save-Muppy008.2fs is your save file corresponding to standard Puppy's pup_save.2fs

I think there is an issue with /tmp

You could exit X, then type:

Code: Select all

mkdir /tmp2
mount /tmp2 /tmp
xwin
If that fixes it, we could make that persistent.
For 008.2 there is a patch for that, and Muppy 008.3 will have the patches already included.

In case Partview isn't included in Muppy (I don't know), it might be a good idea to add that too ;-)

yes, with space.
Also please type:
df -m

and post the result here.
You also can direct the output to a textfile:
df -m >/root/result.txt

Then you can open /root/result.txt with your editor to copy&paste it here.

RT73:
Please look, if you have:
/usr/local/Muppy-rt73-P300/muppy-rt73

Try that if available.
Don't remember to what version I added it.

Mark its on here the rt73 - using your tool it even saw the network - just couldnt connect - said network was down, which i know was wrong laptop on the floor was online wireless. BUT that is THE closetst i got to making that damn Belkin work.

# df-m
bash: df-m: command not found
# df-m2 /root/result.txt
bash: df-m2: command not found
#
thank u for ur personal replies - MUPPY008 is quickly becoming FAV mini Distro and functions better than some large distros with amazing speed. Guess my question shouldnt be is full install coming but is frugal any slower than a full would be??????

Also gaim doesnt work but i installed Pidgin and its a go:

# cd /
# gaim
bash: /usr/bin/gaim: cannot execute binary file
#

how do we remove gaim - its not in petget?????

be sure to click on the "settings" button.
It opens the configuration in Leafpad.

Important is to set the 2 variables:

ESSID=default
MODE="Managed enc B5F356A8"

Of course you must set the values for your network.
I sometimes encounter, that the connection interrupts.
This seems to be related to some jpegs in Websites, a bug.

When that happens, must:

Click on "disconnect".
Wait 5-10 seconds (very important)
Click on "connect".
Wait 5-10 seconds (very important)
Click on "disconnect".
Wait 5-10 seconds (very important)
Click on "connect".

The first "connect" is not able to connect for whatever reason, so it must be done twice.
It is important to wait some seconds, or X might freeze.

df -m
there is a space after df

Full installation might be faster on some machines, but has other problems. On other machines it could be slower. I do not recommend a full installation.
I suggest to try out 008.3, that hopefully will be uploaded this weekend.

It might work faster using the "Mini" version :)

no, that was an answer to the rt73 wizard.
I had not read your gaim-question, as you edited you earlier message.

Gaim should be there.
If it does not run, I cannot help, as I removed all Files from versions earlier than 008.2.
In 008.3 it works.

A workaround for you could be to install the new version of Gaim called pidgin:

cool :P

The difference to Puppys Wizard is:
Puppys Wizard uses autodetection.
A bug in the firmware loads the wrong Kernelmodule rt2xxx.

My wizard loads explicitly rt73, as I once wrote it for tests.
Thanks for reporting the positive result :)

After all the help and no progress i pulled the usb stick out and despite what it was saying - surprise it was ACTUALLY full. No room left - problem SOLVED - lol.

But I do have 1 EVEN bigger problem Mark, I decided to do a fresh install of Muppy008 and be more selective in the stuff i added as with a 446MB distro and most everything included - should be no way i filled a 2G stick in 3 days. So fdisk /dev/sda1 delete make new part. and then write - make bootable and do frugal install of Muppy008. SO fa all good - only problem is when i try to turn off the mup a black screen rolls halfway up the screen stops and thats it. no chance to make a pu_save file all info and work lost. Ok so try again get it where i want it and do reboot this time, screen goes black as expected but then it just stays there. Never gives me ANY options or moves off the black screen - and yes comp power is STILL on. All work lost again. I LOVE MUPPY008 - but will have to give it up if i cant save ANYTHING and have to start fresh EVERY time. Any Ideas - I'll try em ALL to keep the mupster running tis laptop.

Thanx - Josh

n1n31nchn41l5,

I think there is some unclarity here - but it may be mine.

This is my understanding.

The pup_save file is a file with a filesystem inside it.

You have allocated your entire usb flash drive to the pup_save file.

The pup_save file has lots of room in it.

The usb seems to be full.

I think the usb is full with the pup save file / filesystem. But the
pup save file is not full.

I think if you look at any pup save file from outside the space will
look used even if the file is virtually empty.

I think your feeling that there is no way you filled a 2G stick in 3 days
is correct.

Good summary, GeoW. In order to clear any ambiguity, n1n31nchn41l5 ought to post a screenshot of his Partview.

Here's mine. It shows 190 MB remaining free space in my Puppy partition (/dev/sda1) and 101 MB remaining free space in my save file (pup301rc6).
