Is anyone interested in a "Fat Free" Puppy 4.1?

I'm curious how many people are interested in a "Fat Free" Puppy 4.1? When I say Fat Free I am referring to Puppy 4.1 stripped down in a similar way as Fat Free Puppy 3.01

I've been thinking about trying to do a puppy unleashed thing and make it, but it would be a long time before I can get it out.

Anyone else planning to make a "Fat Free" Puppy from the 4.1?

If I were to to do it on my own, what would I need to know? How do I know which packages can be left out? If I did it, it would be nothing but the bare minimum with the desktop and package system. Just enough to start building upon it.

Wolfpup I think is pretty close, puppy 4.0 I think. But the x-server on that didn't work for me, very strange. I was really looking forward to using it. I think you should have a look at puppy unleashed. (read all the documentation in the puppylinux.com developer section.)

Near Identical

That is for 4.0 and I'm more interested in the Puppy 4.1 which (to the best of my knowledge) hasn't been released yet.

Yes indeed I think this is a great idea. A stripped down version like DSL tiny core which is still in development would make a good base platform for web servers. For instance, I would much rather be able add a lampp stack from somewhere like xampp than have it come with the base puppy system.

Another idea would be to focus on security. All the bloat adds security holes that prevent usage in applications that require a secure base.

Yes, small core and just a good browser with pet. That is all I need currently, but if they are bundled, it is even better.

Well, I've been messing with Puppy unleashed 4.0 and it seems pretty straightforward. I did a "Skinny Pup 4.0" and it seems to be working good. Need more people to check it out and see if I'm missing stuff that's needed. When 4.1 comes out, as soon as an unleashed is available I'll give it a shot.

This is just something I have been thinking about because I share the preference for small lean fast sytems. It is an aesthetic choice if nothing else. But I consider that the default for Puppy 4.1 will be to *not* copy itself (pup_410.sfs) into ram. This is also the way I have taken to running my systems for performance reasons acftually--I find better performance if I leave the ram free. So when running like this it doesn't really matter what programs are sitting on the disk--they are small and the disk is comparatively large. The only reason it would matter would be if disk space was very low and at a premium--which could happen in some circumstances I am sure. However, in most circumstances I have come to think that it doesn't matter if I leave AbiWord, for instance, in Puppy, even if I usually use OpenOffice or Siag. So mainly I just leave Puppy alone and pay attention to the programs I actually use. (But full dislcosure: I have burnt up a large stack of CD's remastering Puppy before I figured this out

and I learned a lot from it.)

I save a ton of CDs by using grub to boot any remaster of Puppy. I install a stable Puppy to my first partition, install grub, then make new folders for any other Pup I want to try. I put the 4 needed files in there and edit grub. Reboot and I can boot without ever needing to burn a CD for the new Pups.

Code for grub (I know this works for 3.01 and 4.0... this example has Puppy 4.0 under a folder named /puppy400 on first partition of first drive):

I'm building low power systems that are used as small web servers. They do not have a hard disk. They run out of usb flash memory or compact flash cards. Running out of ram works great for me so the tiny core idea is just what I'm looking for.
