Planning for Puppy 1.0.9

#1 Post by BarryK »

I'm intending that there will be one more in the 1.x series, just bugfixes and minor tweaks.

There are lots of things that can be done to improve 1.0.8.
There are some things that I have forgotten about, although may have been reminded about at some stage.

So, I'm thinking I'll setup a special page for planning for 1.0.9, into which anyone can contribute. Maybe it will be a wiki.
This will not be for suggesting major changes, just bugfixes and tweaks. Will also need an upload capability.

I guess you will get replies here, and files can be uploaded in these places.

Barry,

You can upload what ever you want to ftp://puppyfiles.us/incoming/ and I'll put it into a ftp://puppyfiles.us/pub/testing directory so that others can download. Once you have the final released, I'll drop it into a v1.0.9 directory.

.
A wiki would allow more input, more flexibility and a better use of other developers efforts who I feel might like to have more frequent developer editions.

This can be accomodated if code changes are updated rather than the whole upgrade as one piece.

Wiki News and Developer News might be combined as I suggested some months ago. Or is two pages pages still more efficient?

:)

This is something to think about for Puppy+

May I start? Things that I have in mind:
(*) Xkb support
(*) Upgrade Blinky to 0.7 ("Irresistible")
(*) Patch JWM 1.4
(*) Earlier suggestion of mine: Add Unicode font
(*) Fix help menu entry, notice there is another instance of LD_PRELOAD before dillo in .jwmrc, though it is commented shouldn't it be deleted too?
(*) Fix Gaim inconsistency
Edit, more:
(*) Seamonkey?
(*) Change background to the contest winner?

There are a few problems with user_devx that need straightened out (mismatched headers, etc.)

Improve the selection of icons, many possibilities have already been suggested.

I'm sure there's more. I'll post again after giving it some more thought.

I don't know if it was fixed for 107 or 108, but you could take out the mention about planmaker free or whatever it was near your flash notice in the puppy licince page. (If it is still in puppy, then I recommend putting it on the menu.)

Xlock needs fixed. It will accept anything for a password to unlock the screen.

Yes, especially the "drives" icon is rough. Pizzasgood had a collection of higher quality icons to replace some of the ones in Puppy, but I can no longer find the post.

If not already in 1.08, upgrade setserial from 2.14 to 2.17. setserial-2.17 supports low_latency and spd_warp options and works fine in puppy_1.0.7 and puppy-2a. It was part of the usr5610b package uploaded by tempestous here

Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

Get 'Resize Personal Storage' utility to rm /etc/.XLOADED before it reboots.

That is a nice replacement for the drives icon. The only problem with it is its size: 64x64 pixels.

Puppy's icons are finally "standardized" to 48x48 and I think we should keep it that way. In earlier Puppy's there were some 32x32 icons mixed in which didn't look very nice.

I would also like to see Seamonkey in 1.0.9 instead of Mozilla + Sylpheed.

See my bug reports on Sylpheed: http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=6427

Maybe that's why I've never been able to compile C++ programs in Puppy. I have usr_devx installed, and it starts compiling, but then it spits out errors about missing include files. I'm assuming these are the mismatched headers Nathan was talking about.

Well, shortly after I posted that, there was some kind of error with my host's server. Some other site kept popping up where mine should be. It went away, then came back. Then the server got hacked a couple times, a Vietnamese guy stole my account for a day or two, it got hacked again, and now I think it's been sorted out. I'll be checking on it once I get done reading posts here. Then I can re-upload my images and dotpups.

That usb drive icon is the same one I've been posting for months now. I actually included it in Pizzapup.

Those crystal icon sets that KHL posted way back have some good stuff. That's where I got them all from.
