How to run NFS server on puppy?

#1 Post by rob »

Can I get an nfs server running on puppy?
Has anyone else done this?
I've downloaded nfs tools but don't know if the server is included.
If someone could create a howto/dotpup/both I'd be most thankful.
Its to reflash a zipit wireless messenger with linux.
See http://www.elinux.org/wiki/ZipItWiFiFlash
looks like a good device for finding wifi networks/firing off a quick email/server control through webmin (although no javascript in the elinks compiled for zipit :( )
If I create a live cd with the nfs server, files to flash and a compilation enviroment for arm, it should help developers for the platform and expand usage of puppy. Really could do with the nfs server first though.

Here's a page with a NFS package offered, read the page to check it out, I haven't tried it.

Thanks for trying to help, but that solution didn't work. rpcinfo isn't in the package and I had loads of errors when I tried to insmod the modules. Anyone have any success with making the nfs dotpup?

Bump. How do you setup a NFS server on Puppy using 3.01?

Hi battleshooter; Why do you want to use NFS?
Samba is the network standard, it's Win. compatible, & it's easier to use.
I can't really think of a reason to use NFS, & I've used both.

Thanks for the reply Sunburnt,

I guess I wanted to setup an NFS server cause I thought it would be the easiest way to set up a server on Pups. I use 3.01 so I don't have the file-sharing app that comes with Puppy 4. I kinda want to be able to stream music and stuff though so I'm not sure if it fits under "file sharing". I guess that's why I wanted to set up a server.

Disclaimer: If I'm not making sense it's probably cause I don't understand how things really work.

hi battleshooter,

in which way and to which recipient do you want to stream music?

pc => pc (home-net)
pc => pc (internet)
pc => internet-radio
pc => ...

if receiver = pc
should any audioplayer on the receiver be able to play the stream? Or is it ok to use one special audioplayer?

please give some more details so we can give suggestion/solutions.

cheers
aragon

P.S: You don't need NFS, i think!

If you want to stream music from puppy to a roku soundbridge, a computer running itunes or any other daap client you might find this helpful, looking for firefly / mt-daapd

Samba server is only 2 files: smb & nmb.
A rc.samba file is usually used to start these 2 server daemons.
And there's a config. file: smb.conf

This is all that's needed to share files on a Win network.
Puppy has the libraries that're needed (most of the time).

I thought Puppy 3.xx had the Samba server,
but there's alot of differences between Barry's releases,
& even more between the Puppy variants.

Thanks for all the interest guys.

Ok, so I was heading down the wrong track using NFS, I guess Samba's the way to go. It's just that I had a lot of difficulty getting it going I thought I was going down the wrong track (barking up the wrong tree ;) )

My main interest in this area is being able to stream music from one Puppy laptop to another Puppy laptop and mount shares, so could anyone direct me to an appropriate guide for doing this on Pup 3.01? Obviously this is the wrong post to be continuing on. The two laptops are connected by LAN.

if you want file-access, i think samba is the right direction.

if you just want to play music there are several possibilities:

1.
server = mpd
receiver/player = gmpc / ncmpc

2.
server = gnump3d
receiver/player = anything you like it's webbased (standalone)

3.
server = samba (mount)
receiver/player = any player you want as you play from mounted

4.
....

1. is a nice solution. If you're running your puppy with mounted devx, 2. (gnump3d) is also a nice and easy solution. If you are able to setup your shares, 3. is also easy.

if you want to try 1. or 2., please give a short info, i have packages for these.

For 3., i think HairyWill is an expert... hairywill corrected, it's disciple.

cheers

battleshooter; The /etc/samba/smb.conf file is the key to making Samba work.
Google for a proper config. file to start with & instructions on how to mod. it.
It's really quite easy to understand Samba's config. file layout.

Did you find smb & nmb in /opt/samba , or in /usr/sbin , or maybe in /etc/local/sbin
If they're there you just need to start them & have a good config. file.
