audio at startup and power tray applet

#561 Post by emil »

I did a brief testing with your dpup - looks very promising. I couldn't resist and loaded Battle of Wesnoth from the debian main repos - it worked "out of the box".

I was not so lucky when I dried to install octave (Numerical software ) from the repos, some packages and libraries where missing ( definitly not "out of the box")

I also found some small bugs, or at least things that need polishing. I dont know if they are specific to my HP notebook or if also others can find those issues.

sound: After startup the pc sound is on full volume, this means white noise in my speakers. I have to reduce volume manually.

power applet: After choosing "Power saving" some weird behavior is shown. The screen is dimmed down and I couldnt find an easy possibility to brighten it up again (I noticed that xgamma is present, but how about adding the xgamma-gui and make it available in the "desktop" menu?).
Even more desturbing - my USB mouse was dissabled (Touchpad worked). I had to re-plug the mouse to get it working again.

When using the package manager I found that the information screen which lists all installed dependencies becomes broken if there a many (more than 20). It runs out of space and there are no confirmation buttons at the bottom.

just my 2 cents - keep up the good work.

full xorgwizard?

#562 Post by upnorth »

- Can't figure out how to get the full xorgwizard
I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but these may help:

in rc.sysinit: uncomment

/etc/rc.d/rc.country ;STATUS=$((STATUS+$?)) #this asks for keyboard layout.

status_func $STATUS

in rc.country: uncomment

LANG="`grep '^LANG=' /etc/profile | cut -f 2 -d '='`"

if [ "`locale -a | grep "$LANG"`" = "" ];then

/usr/sbin/chooselocale cli > /dev/console

Geany has the color picker ... that's why it's out

Alright, I'll add it. I'm kinda busy today and tomorrow, I don't have much free time and I spend it on my very own distro, it requires much more work than Squeeze :)

emil. Press alt + left click and drag page upwards. Do it as long as needed. At the end you will find familiar buttons again :)

This is an old bug. Is it fixed in some puppy versions?

volumeicon

#567 Post by upnorth »

This is an alternative tray volume control for those with transparent or translucent panels.
Features

* Change volume by scrolling on the systray icon
* Ability to choose which channel to control
* Configurable stepsize (percentage of volume increase/decrease per scrollwheel step)
* Several icon themes (with gtk theme as default)
* Configurable external mixer
* Volume Slider
source
http://softwarebakery.com/maato/volumeicon.html

this can be launched from Startup by script or symlink, or from .xinitrc

You can then optionally comment out the script that launches retrovol in /usr/sbin/delayedrun. In retrovol configuration uncheck "enable tray icon"

I still use retrovol as the mixer, but out of the box, this is configured with alsamixer(xterm -e 'alsamixer'). See pic to configure to use retrovol.

config options:
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --build=i486-pc-linux-gnu CFLAGS="-march=i486 -mtune=i686 -Os -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"

mt paint color picker

#568 Post by don570 »

There is no need to include a special color picker.
mtpaint does the equivalent. It is explained in the mtpaint manual.
3.3.6 Picking a Colour from the Canvas

While you are painting it is sometimes useful to select a colour from the canvas for colour A or B. To do this you hold down the Ctrl key and press the left mouse button to choose colour A or the right button for colour B.

Ctrl+double click will select the gamma corrected average colour under the selection rectangle, or if there is no selection, under the brush square. Again, double clicking the left button selects colour A, and right button, colour B. You can use this to select colours for antialiasing.

If you picked an RGB colour from canvas, and want to find one like it in your palette, you can do it by Ctrl+middle click. This will change colour A to the palette colour nearest to it, and choose colour B and pattern to together produce the best possible approximation of the original colour A. If you do not need the dither, but only the nearest solid colour, then Ctrl+middle click a second time - this will set colour B to same as colour A, and pattern to solid.

While you are editing the whole palette, you can select any colour from anywhere on your computer screen by pressing the eye dropper icon.
So you can get the color anywhere on screen

packages available for Imagination and Squeeze-Right-click

#570 Post by don570 »

I made a pet package for Imagination 2.1 especially for Squeeze Puppy.
This is an app that will make a video presentation from images and sound.
It's basically a simple way to make a video.

I added a bunch of libs to make it work in Squeeze.

Available here

http://www.datafilehost.com/download-266dc76b.html

More info :

I've made a new version of Squeeze-Right-click
which makes more right click options by Rox Filer available
Video will now open full screen with mplayer ( press escape to quit)
and Abiword will open several type of documents..

AYTTM

#571 Post by tlchost »

zpup002 seems toi have difficulties with any of the AYTTM pets that show up in the package manager.

None of them show up in the menu, and in ayttm can not be initiated in terminal mode. Typing attymsheel in terminal complains that the attym exec can not be found.

Ayttm has extra dependencies IIRC. :)

By the way, 010 is kinda frozen since I'm busy with my own distro and tomorrow I'm supposed to work, so this Saturday won't be productive as the previous one

Please tell us a little about your own distro. You seem to be principle on dpup Squeeze and it must really be something if it improves on Squeeze.

Cheers,
Jim

It's an independent distro, the focus is simplicity, portability and stability. I've been working on it for about a year, on and off ... in total, I think it's less than a month of work

Just trying many ideas on it, things that cannot be implemented on Puppy.

At the moment I'm working on improvements to the 2.6.32.24 kernel from 009. I found a good way to make Squeeze boot even faster, but it requires lots of editing to the init scripts. I'll try this approach - really hard work but I think it's worth it.

I also want to make some nice boot splash with a "fail-safe" mode (with lots of additional kernel parameters, like modeset=0 to turn off KMS) and memtest. Maybe we could use an ASCII Puppy logo after all...
