If it ain't broke why fix it?

#1 Post by Trobin »

Just a niggling little question that crops up every once in a while.

If a person is happy using Windows 3.2, 98,XP or whatever and it it works for them then why try to fix a problem that doesn't exist?

I tried to do that with a relative. They used Win 98 for years after Win XP was out, and puppy versions were better. Tried moving that person on to a more modern faster OS. Created a whole new set of friustrations for myself, things didn't look the same, weren't the same size, etc. Until I wiped everything and put Win 98 back on.

If it ain't broke then why fix it?

I have always gone for a

Have Windows....use or try Puppy approach.

The sheer speed is the drawcard.
As well as this great forum.

Also we have had so many great releases over the past year,
that there is bound to be a keeper for most everyone.

Our recent convert icyos says enough here.
He even made his own RexBang release.

Plus his videos on Youtube.
All inspired by Sneekylinux

And one of Sneeky's latest.

It's really difficult to change someone if they don't want to change. I couldn't get my wife to use Linux until her Windows crashed and couldn't be resurrected without a new install. I said I might be able to get to it in a couple of weeks. Puppy was up and running in five minutes.

She whined about not having Windows for a week or two, but now she's used to Linux and I think she would have trouble going back to Windows.

It is your duty as a penguin

My sisters 'great when it was working' XP laptop turned into a brick
due to the OS (not the hardware)
Puppy was too geeky for her but she used it for a while . . .
I refused to reinstall XP (tough love) :?

She wanted a simple browsing and email computer and I advised the Ipad2
She loves it. 8)

What happened to the brick?
It was given to a friend to install XP, friend was burgled
Insurance will be available hopefully for further expensive toys.

. . . meanwhile Spot has become Slacko

When I saw the title of this thread in the index I thought it was going to be a critique of frantic Puppy development. ;)

Some things that are broken needs to get fixed :)

Take the long trouble some of us had with shutting down properly in Puppy. We had to reboot into Windows and to do a proper shutdown through that one and that took ages to boot up to just shut down and all the updates windows also wanted to do.

Took years to fix the puppy shut down. Took a half year of frustration before I was told to write nosmp to get reliable booting from lupu525.

Apart from some Smartphones needing Windows for upgrade or even for "rooting" one can just forget windows most of the time. I have not used it the last 6 month as I remember. I don't even know how to log in anymore :)

But it is very true that people don't want to use something them not used to. So true. If somebody gave me an Apple computer for free then I would put Puppy on it and if that fail sell it and keep on using Puppy.

if Puppy isn't broken then why use other distros?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Seems some folks could not resist the opportunity to tell you about broken windows, etc.

Why would you consider fixing what ain't broken?

The user told you that even though the system worked, they:
wanted something different
needed to escape the evil folks from Redmond
needed to be using the latest technology
wanted to establish a new learning curve

Given none of the above are true....it may be better to ignore our own prejudices and not fix what ain't broke.

I had a job where I was pretty stressed. Told the boss I was quitting, he responded by saying that if I stayed I'd get used to the stress.

I said that if I araldited a brick to the top of my head I'd get used to that as well.

Heheh, no need for Araldit at all. Any glue would work for a standard brick :)

Why fix it if it ain't broke? Because it likely will break, and sometimes change is good. Windows is an accident waiting to happen. It was an xp virus that killed my desktop computer and drove me forcefully to Linux. Now I have fast running computers without worry of viruses or malware etc. My wife's netbook was running a crippled version of Win7 (starter edition), so I dual-booted it with Mint 9. But Mint made the netbook run a bit warm, so I installed Ubuntu 11.04 with some trepidation about my wife being able to use Unity, very happy with no complaints from her and the netbook runs cooler now. I think if the right Linux is matched up to the right hardware, just about anyone could use Linux rather than Windows. Right now my mom is using Joli OS. She had never been able to get used to Windows, not much of a computer user, but she is easily adjusting to Joli OS with its big apps on the desktop and one-click operation to email, browser, etc. I'm using Rexbang right now and enjoying it very much. What a boring world it would be if I had stuck with Windows.
