Sorry to be so dumb - first time I've seen a screensaver.
Very nice, but how to disable it etc etc??

Many thanks.

Working fine here.
Since Firefox went to the quicker release schedule I've started using SeaMonkey more anyway.Seems more stable.

Firefox

#4603 Post by oligin10 »

Hi guys, just an update. Tried Classic Pup Top 9 on another computer. First time, was on Compaq Evo desktop, and it crashed Classic Pup when trying to go to insideline.com from livecd with no save file (has Peppermint OS loaded). Second time, again livecd with no save file, on a Sony Vaio laptop, and same results. Maybe it is due to running in livecd mode. Compaq has 256m ram with 512m swap, and second computer has 768m ram with 500m swap. Thanks, Rob
P.S. Ttuuxxx, love the boot screen and the download extra drivers feature.

Sorry, forgot to mention also that I have Opera portable installed on Sony Vaio, and it goes to website and works just fine.

Rob, FWIW, I have an ASUS P5A motherboard with AMD K2-6-450 and 768MB

I was able to get to http://www.insideline.com OK, using Opera 11.01 under TOP9.

Thanks, ttuuxx, but the Opera 11.51 pet installs, but does not run;
segmentation fault.
I think that happened previously; the newer Opera makes some assumption about hardware, don't recall what.

Where's this "download extra drivers feature"?

And where's the SFSfile converter?

Thanks,

Sheldon

Hi Sheldon, it seems to be a problem when using Firefox Aurora, which is already installed. I have no problems with Opera going to same website. jonT has experienced same problem and hopefully problem will be resolved. Thanks, Rob
P.S. Download extra drivers is under network connection wizard which I ran by clicking on small computers in tray on bottom right side of screen. It is what shows active interfaces.

Hi JonT,

The log file shows:

Code: Select all

Backtrace:

It could be related to composite extension needed but not found???. Puppy 214X does not have composite enabled by default, please check the /etc/xorg.conf file and add the following line:

Code: Select all

Section "Extensions"
   Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection
You can add other options to speed up render process, look at: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=50428

Also try different display resolutions.

Then restart Xorg, try again and please feedback.

Be aware if you run xorgwizard to change display resolution or reboot the xorg.conf file will be recreated and your changes lost.

just delete the link in /root/Startup/xscreensaver and restartX
or if its just a one off, open a terminal and type killall xscreensaver

insideline.com crashes

#4611 Post by JonT »

clarf, thanks for your attention. Sadly, your suggested addition to xorg.conf did not fix the insideline.com crashes; however, I will add it for general performance improvement as well as try your other additions spelled out in your earlier post.

Your second suggestion of changing resolutions gave success.

The laptop's native resolution is 1024x768x24. Bottom line: Changing to 1024x768x16 apparently works as does 1280x800x16, which the screen won't really do. I note that the website recommends 1280 to get everything on the screen; can't accommodate them.

I can program but do not fathom the systems requirements of linux, so due to a lack of astuteness, I have to use a trial and error approach. Further, there were some intermittent successful web sites loads, though not on a fresh reboot, my conclusions are tentative despite a few hours trying things. All boots were with pfix=ram and all conclusions are based on several trials (but not dozens).

Other things I found: 214X top 5 with FF 4.0b2 worked at native resolution; so did FF 4.0b2 with top 9.

oligin10, I should mention that I have the nasty Brookdale 82845 graphics; do you? Maybe it's only that sad brotherhood. Sick of that problem!

ttuuxxx, I wouldn't ditch Aurora unless several others have problems.

Thanks all,
Jon

Hi Jon the thing is that I like having you around and I aim to please, I don't mind downgrading Firefox as long as it works out for you.

You're kind, ttuuxxx. I plan on staying around. My Brookdale graphics chips don't like the newer kernels/X's and boots reliably (on maintained puppies) only on 214X, wary and Legacy OS. I try to contribute as best I can by doing some testing on the newer puppy releases but a 50% boot rate is not so good for daily use.

insideline.com is the only site that has caused a problem and I have a fix, for me, that I'll try if another problem site shows up. I say keep Aurora.

Aurora

#4614 Post by oligin10 »

Hi guys, just wanted to be clear on this. I'm not advocating getting rid of Aurora, just wanted to let you know what happened. I am more inclined towards the 4 series puplets. I just like to test different puplets on two or three different machines, seeing how well they do, and if I want to do a full install on one of them. I myself always use Opera, so it makes no difference to me, as I would install Opera anyway. But I also want Ttuuxxx to know how impressed I am with Classic Pup. I hadn't checked it out in a while, and I can't believe how it has matured into such a great puplet. Thanks Ttuuxxx for all your hard efforts and the efforts of everyone working on Classic Pup. Thanks, Rob
