can someone develop puppy for tablet? PupTab???

#1 Post by shengchieh »

With webOS going downhill and Meego never rising, Android seems to
be the only one left. I don't like Android that much since

1. it is too google-centric (use something other than gmail, etc)
2. I consider android as a fork of linux (that's debatable)
3. too much patent wars
4. not open source enough

If you wish to debate about these issues, start another thread. The
purpose of this thread is to "stir up the pot". I would love to see
some geek(s) develop puppy linux for tablets. And let this iso be
"pure" GPL and "spread/mushroom" like linux. Can some geek(s)
take puppy linux, add touch screen ability and other tablet stuffs,
let loose a PupTab to the "wild". PupTab could have access to
tons of applications in puppy linux repository.

I am not a geek, nor have a tablet, no use puppy linux (but I think
it is a great distro). But I would like to see some "non-commercial"
iso in the tablet arena to stir up competition.

Which tablet?
Tablets trend towards the ARM series of processor.
So Puppy + Debian or Slackware binaries (compiled for ARM)
is required.
Woof (our 'underdog' system for building Puppys) does not yet support
64 bit or ARM

China is producing the Android clone 'Qiushi'
but no mass market iped is available in the West

Apple is pretending it has invented the dynabook/tablet concept

A touch screen computer is no longer science fiction

It maybe that Saluki will be an integration of ARM hardware and Puppyness

shengchieh "I am no geek"

I think that is the key words here. I am no geek either but geeky enough to get that it is incredible hard work to set up what you ask for.

One would have to be on that level of understanding that those that created WebOS and Android or the Debian ARM versions are on to do that.

not an ideal solution though

Puppy Tablet

#4 Post by Furanshisuko »

My sister had a chinese tablet with Androd, and gave it to me because of the low funcionality it shows.

The android market needs an account and a cellphone number to work, which is very annoying. There are very few apps you can get from other ways, not like linux and its freedoom.

If I can get a replacement, just like puppy for linux, I would be very happy to try it..

just bypass the market, do a search for android software and download the .apk file directly and install it. problem solved. Android is in my opinion worse than win 7. But there are debian images out there than you just image an sd card and you insert this and the tablet will auto boot from it....
it takes alot of effort to get touchscreen etc working in alot of cases but these things make really neat quiet efficient servers, but lack the power to run a normal puppy like desktop with xorg jwm roxfiler and firefox all running.

I turbocharged my 7" Neopad with software from theses sites.

It can be tricky finding the right codes for your tablet but it made a huge difference to mine. It went from being quite unresponsive and jerky to smooth like the ipad.

Uberoid is certainly better than standard android, was for me anyway.
