Works on celeron

#202 Post by rodin.s »

Slacko-5.3.1.4 boots and works OK on Celeron 900MHz 512RAM. I see no problems except for Russian translation in menu in some places.

@russoodle.. you can't go wrong with the King-o-Bling's advice

-

There's a little bling for your browser in the main post. I'd include it in the build but the only way I know how is to hard code it in /root/.mozilla.. I don't do that. I haven't written anything hard coded to /root in awhile and I'm not about to revert to that bad habit.

You can easily make personas yourself. I was surprised how easy it was. You need to do it in firefox though (but it can be worn by seamonkey). You also need the "personas plus" extension then follow this tut.

-
@rodin.s , can you update the translation? Or is it a software issue?

Manual frugal install on the main Athlon XP box...... no problems.Actually seems to be consuming a bit less ram than previous kernels.

I will update it when I find the file. It's in new jwm-tools somewhere but I haven't found it yet.
I would also suggest upgrading Homebank to version 4.4 like iguleder did in his puplets. It has version 4.4 more then a year now.

Thanks 01micko. Testing now your scripts. I tried not to create slacko kernel, lol.
So far looks good. Of course I had to change something in DOTconfig. Just for my liking, nothing important was left out, what I quickly scanned.
And the build.sh script is great already.
Big hand for you form snowy Finland.

Slacko 5.3.3-alpha4 ..testing (5.3.1.4)

#208 Post by Billtoo »

I'm running from the live dvd with a save file.
I used SNS on the wireless network.
I installed the mesa driver from slickpet.
I installed a Goggles Music Manager 0.12.6 sfs that I made today (it
needs mesa from quickpet installed to work), if anyone might like it
tell me here and I'll upload it and post the download link.

Russian in jwm

#209 Post by rodin.s »

I have found and corrected jwm file. It was in /usr/share/locale/ru/LC_MESSAGES
I also noticed that reminder to install flash player appears each time when browser is started if I say 'no'.

Thanks rodin.s

I'll fix the flash popup issue in /usr/sbin/delayedrun (note slacko's version is a custom)

Billtoo, goggles music mgr will be a fine addition to PPM, please post.

Okay, it needs the mesa driver from slickpet installed but I imagine most everyone installs that during setup anyway.

May be a bug,may just be a glitch here but....... as soon as I select the "drivers" tab in Slickpet it freezes and becomes totally unresponsive.Killing the process makes Slickpet disappear but upon trying to relaunch the message "Slickpet is already running...." is the result.Restarting X has no results, complete reboot is necessary.
However, ignoring the "drivers" tab Slickpet works and downloads fine.

Otherwise, installed Mesa (with nouveau) and......

Code: Select all

# glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
2178 frames in 5.0 seconds = 435.261 FPS
2268 frames in 5.0 seconds = 453.531 FPS
2336 frames in 5.0 seconds = 467.023 FPS
2283 frames in 5.0 seconds = 456.428 FPS
2341 frames in 5.0 seconds = 467.666 FPS
2300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 459.500 FPS
2297 frames in 5.0 seconds = 459.238 FPS
2299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 459.351 FPS
2293 frames in 5.0 seconds = 458.522 FPS

James, didn't test myself yet the drivers thingy for nvidia because I don't have any yet, that may be the bug. Also, I need a new routine because nouveau needs to be unloaded before nvidia can be loaded requiring a reboot.

needs a rewrite anyway because of some hard coding.

That will come soon. Thanks for report.

Further clarification on Slickpet....... it does freeze when actually clicking the "test" button..... not the actual "drivers" tab.
Otherwise,appears to function normally.

5.3.1.4 Kernel working great

#215 Post by mikeslr »

Thank you 01micko for another great job. Slacko with the 5.3.1.4 kernel is working great on my Amd Phenom II X4 920, Ati Radeon 3100 Graphics ZTSystem, It's good to hear that puppians with Athlon CPUs also found it usable. I'll have to try it on my eMachine with AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ with NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Graphics.
Actually, both the 3.1.2 & the 3,1,3 worked well on the ZTSystem. So well that I installed my "customary apps" in to the 3.1.2's SaveFile, and after making certain that my system didn't have inherent problems with 3.1.3 or 3.1.4 moved it out of a protected folder and rebooted, choosing that SaveFile rather than the initial SaveFile created by 3.1.3 and 3.1.4. Updating the SaveFile to 3.1.3 went smoothly, but the system hung while updating it to 3.1.4. Not, however, before the update had been completed as I was able to reboot into it on the second try. So far, nothing appears to be broken.
A note in passing which may help others who run into problems testing new puppies. When I initially tried the 3-Kernel Slacko, the 06 version of Saluki and the 3-Kernel version of Lupu all reported being unable to find their respective sfs files. 3 different puppies was too much to be a coincidence. So I moved all my puppy files out of the Ext3 partition on which I kept them, reformatted it as an Ext4 and moved the puppy files back. I also redownloaded the "offending" ISOs. Frugal installs of each then successfully booted to desktop and worked, although the 3-Kernel Lupu still was unable to connect to the web via RaLink RT2561/RT61 wifi.

Boots straight to desktop on Dell Studio XPS 1340.

No whingeing....no hiccups....pretty smooth.

No sound....master set at >> 63
and I unmuted >> speaker.

Ahh! b43 Broadcom.....no luck.

Will try a pet and save.

""""""""""

No good.

Unloaded b43 and b43 legacy...and blacklisted them.

Reboot and see what happens.

Chris.

Jim1911 wrote:Hi Mick,

Manual installation on a ext4 partition on my desktop boots to a desktop fine, however alpha 4 does not recognize my wireless mouse. Laptop has same type of Logitech mouse which all previous versions have recognized. I've reverted back to Alpha 3 which works fine on both my desktop and laptop, both of which have i7 processors.

Hi Jim,

I guess this is due to k3.2.1 being a young branch whereas k3.1.10 is a more mature branch.

Now that I have kernel compilation down to tee I can re-do k3.1.10 W/O BFS which screwed up alot of older gear. Funny though my older lappy (IBM r51) loved it! Certainly ran faster, especially graphics wise, but that may be due to k3.1.10 and have nothing to do with BFS.

I'm almost done playing with kernels  and am now leaning toward 3.1.10 (unless they bring out 3.1.11 in the next few hours!)

So.. expect another alpha (final alpha) within the next 24hrs.
It's been fun eh? "Kernel hopping"

-

Jasper, I fixed the calendar issue too, pretty easy once I knew what to look at  . It's in /root/.jwm/JWMRC. There is a bunch of "GROUP" variables and "igucal" (the calendar proggy) is missing.

@ GROUP5="" there should be the entry thus:

Code: Select all

GROUP5="NAME=igucal  nolist layer:12"
..then run "fixmenus" and then "jwm -restart" and the calendar "close" button will be exposed.

-

James C, I didn't get a crash when I tested my nvidia driver, it worked as expected and suggested "mesa-" as there are no kernel drivers yet.. I wonder what happened? You can run

Code: Select all

/usr/local/graphics-test/graphix_test
and post the output if you want.. if it doesn't crash!!

-

I just compiled jwm-578, Joe released yesterday.. it addresses an issue with screen rotation and res change using xrandr when taskbar is at hidden state, it's almost* there, when taskbar is at hidden state it just needs a click on the desktop to force the panel to it's correct position, close! Normal taskbar state seems fine with rotation and res change. BTW, it is patched with my larger window decorations. If you don't like them I'll put an unpatched version in PPM anyway.. I'm still unsure! But with manu Puppy fans having "tired" eyes they are easier to see.

Mick the Netgear WN111 is not supported in this Slacko 5.3.1.4.

Normally WN111 uses the ar9170usb driver which worked great in earlier puppies.

According to this website:
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ar9170
the ar9170usb has been replaced by the carl9170 driver in Linux 3.0.

carl9170 doesn't appear to be included in Slacko either.

Mind you I never found the carl9170 driver to be as reliable as the older ar9170usb driver.

Here is the http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drive ... l9170-1.fw for linux 3.1 and newer, version 1.9.4

Are you able to include a suitable driver for the WN111?

Thanks

Hmmm... didn't see it in the DOTconfig.. doesn't mean it's not there  .. I'll do what I can.

EDIT:
straight form the config.. all versions I have compiled so far..

Code: Select all

# CONFIG_ATH9K_HTC_DEBUGFS is not set
CONFIG_CARL9170=m
CONFIG_CARL9170_LEDS=y
CONFIG_CARL9170_WPC=y
So it's already in.. as a module.

It lives at /lib/modules/3.2.1-slacko_4gx2/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ath/carl9170/carl9170.ko

What is actually happening? Maybe it needs firmware?
