How will Puppy run in a computer with 64 MB of RAM?
Hi all, I have a compaq presario 12Xl307 with 64MB ram and 10gb HDD . I want to know if puppy linux (version 412 onwards) will run (not too slowly ) on this pc with a gui. If not can you please suggest a version of puppy linux that will run on it and also a link to download it. I really wanna revive this old timer pc .
Thanking you,
Sam

Look at my last response below ....Cheat Frugal.
Will be fine on your compact.
I have tested on similar Compaqs.
Obviously you are not going to get scorching speeds...
but you will be surprised.

Barry also made Retro Versions around this time,
for older kit. May or may not be better for you.
Here is the Aussie Internode mirror.
Faster download 4 you even for overseas folk.
Supports most official downloads....thanks Internode.

He did that to upload it easily....at that time.
PULP 0.03 rename the .doc to .iso as usual.

Burn it slowly. 24 speed is enough....maybe 16 speed.
4 Windows here is my uploaded ISO burner.
Imgburn.
( Burn at 32 speed tops. Normally.)
BUT YOU burn it more slowly....to match your old hardware.
Use this ...no install.. don't update.
ImgBurn.exe .... Size: 1.53 MB

Welcome to Puppy.
Better off to do a what I call a cheat frugal of Puppy.
Copy the puppy main files to the root of
your hard drive...see my post here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29881
" Boot from the CD.
Copy the pup_xxx.sfs and zdrv_xxx.sfs to your hard drive and boot.
The 2 files must be renamed to lower case if copied in Windows.
Different Puppies...different names where xxx is substituted. "
Basically Puppy boots off cd....
searches your hard drive
finds the same file it would use from cd
and boots up quickly from your hard drive.
Like adding ram to your computer.
Only Puppy can do this.
Been around since about Puppy 2.10????
Much safer for first timers to Puppy.
Great for low end machines.
Puppy 4.1 now also has only one main file.
Puppy 4.12 = pup_421.sfs
Puppy Pulp = pup_412pulp.sfs
:::::::::
Before that you needed to copy 2 files...as below
Puppy 3 Series :
pup_301.sfs
zdrv_301.sfs
Puppy 4 Seriesl:
pup_398.sfs
zdrv_398.sfs
Puppy 4.1. = pup_410.sfs

Your best bet is focussing on upgrading the memory.saransaleen wrote: I really wanna revive this old timer pc .

Maybe there are recycling sites that offer the required hardware.
You seem to have up to a potential 320MB of mem.

Hope this helps - I run puppy 2.16 on a compaq presario laptop with only 64 MB of RAM - I boot from a live cd, but have a save file on the gard drive. You will need a swap file, mine is 128 MB.`f00 wrote:As above^ .. zenfunk's PULP is a puplet that might interest/fit the old timer as well - links for dl are scattered a bit in that thread.

More importantly, dont try and install Chrome, Firefox,...etc. you need to stick to lightweight applications such as netsurf, dillo, Hv3 (all browsers) and your 64 MB laptop will happily continue to be useful for years to come......
Compaq Presario 1685 - 64 MB - 380 Mhz - Puppy 2.16
i was going to make the same point, i struggled with a 4 series with twice as much ram as you, where as 2 16 was excellentravenxau wrote:Hope this helps - I run puppy 2.16 on a compaq presario laptop with only 64 MB of RAM - I boot from a live cd, but have a save file on the gard drive. I have Puppy 4.2 installed, running on an old machine with a Cyrix P233 64Mb memory (maxed out) and a 4Gb disk. ISA Network Card, and I think I got the Modem working as well.
It works - slowly with Firefox, but is functional in a dire emergency.

I have Compaq Presario 700Mhz with 128 MB of ram
It sucked! I had Puppy 5.2.8. I kept running out of ram!
I went to a computer shop in town and found two sticks of 256 for $10.00!
I made sure the tech new it was for an old Compaq. They work! 512 MB rocks!!
