Remastered Quirky iso is not bootable. Tried 3 times.

#621 Post by Henry »

I have been struck by Quirky. Very attractive and ingenious, especially the :remastering function. But I haven't been able to get this to work. The choices/instructions for making it bootable are (to me)confusing. I tried gparted to set the boot flag. Seems this is doing it the hard way - and it doesn't work. Why should one have to do a separate operation for this?

Where is the best/latest place to download Quirky? To make sure I get any fixes.

Keep 'em coming, Barry!

Go to the first page on this thread and read from there. Everything is updated and working fine on my end, even with my old machines.

Quirky does not come with Gparted, so if you want to use that you will have to install it from somewhere else.

If you want 64-bit, you will have to install from a 64-bit OS to make everything work. I simply installed FatDog64 701 to a USB stick, downloaded my Quirky onto that USB stick, and installed Quirky onto my hard drive from there. FatDog has Gparted included, so you can install it immediately after installing Quirky.

There is also a 32-bit version of Quirky. I use both 64-bit and 32-bit, as I have both types of machines. You may want or need to use both, too.

There are a few programs in Quirky that do not work at all, or do not work properly--yet. Quirky is in development as of this writing. Read all the materials and read the disclaimer for best results.

And when you do get your Quirky version(s) installed, be sure to go to Filesystem and run Quirky Version Upgrade Manager. It is updated to 7.0.4.1 as of this writing.

Hi all,
after a few weeks of searching for correct dependencies, I re-packed some 64bit apps for myself. I would like to make it available for Quirky, but I can not find a suitable topic... Now I post here but if there is a better place please let me know, thanks.

LibreOffice has been compiled for Quirky already. If you do a search in the repository, it will pop up.

I downloaded and installed your FileZilla. Though it says it is installed successfully, on trying to open the program there is zero response. It does nothing.

A look at April 7 041 after several dys o exploration

#627 Post by Henry »

Hello.
I've been using Puppies nearly from the beginning, and am no stranger to the forum. I am not a developer but a heavy Puppy user. Quirky is different in many ways - and maybe not quite finished, but I couldn't resist trying it.

In my first post I noted my difficult in making a bootable disc. I still have that problem. So I thought, why not try a "drive" installation, Surely they can (and have to) make that bootable. without my fumbling intervention.

I had a 30G flash drive on the table so used that. Bigger than necessary but I thought I might find the extra space handy (it did take an hour or so to "zeroize.") I naively assumed that I could restart with the flash drive in and April would start and come up with the new desktop I had somehow saved. Wrong and wrong. Saving is mysterious. Mixing DVDs and flash drives is complicated. The "save" button tries to get you a new DVD. How is the session saved to the flash drive.?

This was the first time for me. and from time to time it seemed Barry was interjecting a "By the way." which is where I first heard of zeroizing. I seem to have missed the bit about explicitly saving or not the session. I am hopeful for help.

Another "quirk" is that part of the Seamonkey screen black as I was typing now. April has a lot of pizazz and promise..

My two cents: forget about the bootable disc and "zeroizing" and all the rest of it. Go to the first page of this thread and read carefully and use the installer. Or you can download the necessary files to a USB stick and install from there (this is how I prefer to do it).

Quirky doesn't use a save file. Quirky is not a Puppy. Quirky is a fork of Puppy. It is not like the Puppies you are used to and does not work the same way. Quirky is a whole new concept. It took me a while to get this through my head, too.

Quirky has both 32 and 64 bit versions, so be sure to get the right one or both, according to your wants and needs.

Hi Xanad! Thanks for the pets. I'm really enjoying Double Commander, and I'm looking forward to giving Vivaldi a shot :-) I tried out wbar as well, but wbar-config consistently fails with a segmentation fault. Any ideas?

Ciao Barry,
I noticed that the file /usr/sbin/savesession has no the 'export' for momamager.
I added this two lines at 21 and 22

Code: Select all

export TEXTDOMAIN=savesession
export OUTPUT_CHARSET=UTF-8
The attachment include:
savesession fixed
savesession.pot (i18n)
savesession.po (it)
savesession.mo (it)
Attachments
Save_Session.tar.gz

It's really hard to follow the 32-bit vs 64-bit version discussions as they are intermingled in this thread.

Does the unique installer process apply to the 32-bit version as well as the 64-bit?

Everything I've seen related to the installer includes "64" somewhere - implying that it is specific to the 64-bit version.

I'd like to try this on an older, not ancient, ACER 32-bit laptop.

Thanks ...

I had an error in the directory chain ... sigh.

I also am not as tired and can actually read with comprehension - will give "installquirky.x86" a try ...

There is no "4install-quirky-to-drive.gz" in the 32-bit directory.

Is this an oversight or does this mean that "Method D" is the only option to install the 32-bit version of Quirky-April to a USB stick, please?

Download *-8gb.img.xz.
Expand and install (for example of Flash drive being sdb) (in a non-Puppy distro, you might have to do the 'sudo' thing, to run as root). Substitute correct name of .img.xz and drive for that of example given here:

# xz --decompress --stdout quirky-6.1-8gb.img.xz > /dev/sdb
# sync
OR:
# xz --decompress --stdout april-6.89-8gb.img.xz | dd of=/dev/sdb bs=4M conv=fdatasync
# sync

The first example works, but I recommend the second, using 'dd'.
Just thought I'd ask before plowing ahead and making a mess of things here.

Thanks ...

I found it several levels higher in the 7.0 directory.

I'm getting the error that mkfs-f2fs isn't available & I need to install f2fs-tools.

dpup Exprimo 15 has mkfs in /sbin/ but not mkfs.f2fs

I just booted Wary 5.5 from CD then added the devx but even though Wary 5.5 supposedly includes f2fs I get the same error.

PPM flags f2fs as already installed but does show another version ...

Why would the installed version not be recognized?

I am running Wary 5.5 from DVD without a save file - could that cause a problem?

Thanks ...

While patiently ... ok, not so patiently ... waiting I installed Wary 5.5 as Frugal, rebooted to create a savefile, added the devx, then rebooted again.

Tried everything re. the QuirkyApril32-bit install to a USB drive again and same error.

Is something real weird going on with f2fs-tools?

i wasn't able to get the install script (just tried 64 bit but this shouldn't matter) on a precise 5.5 installation even though i had installed some sort of patch to give (at least gparted) some sort of f2fs ability (which it may've lost--i vaguely remember once being able to something with f2fs with this machine--maybe a week or two worth of stuff). things worked well when using the scripts in precise 5.7-era pups.

so, yeah, the 5.5 may be too outdated and that may be your problem.

(32 bit or 64 bit machines can both install (but not use) 32 bit or 64 bit (can use 32 or 64 bit pups) april 7s. )

don't know anything about dpup exprimo, sorry.
