I replaced Windows XP with Puppy

#1 Post by purple_ghost »

I helped some others who were using XP, which no longer worked on the internet, to put Puppy Linux on the machines.

Talk like a Linux user. Guilty as charged.

Don't mind the across the pond riffraff that likes to go off topic to insult others.
Just grow a thick skin.
Read the hateful rhetoric.

Consider the source. Then give it the credence it deserves.
Some folks have no lives and live to be offended by forum statements by others.

Kinda a hall monitor mentality is the way I look at it.

I am not one of them.
P.S. One of my XP Wireless Desktop machines surfs the internet OK using SlimJet browser with ClamAV being the wall flower in the corner.

I don't boot it up much except for Itunes stuff and other drm stuff I use.
Your post statements I take with a grain of salt just like others posts.

Nice thing you are doing for your friends Though. Keep up the good work. :D

What's the advantage to using Slimjet in XP, and how to install it in XP?

I have XP installed, but I've disabled network connection.
Is it safe to connect to the internet provided I use Slimjet?

slimjet for windows Windows Version (32 bit)
Stable Release ( 4.0.15.0 )

Regular installer ( 41.96MB , 2015-07-28 )
http://www.slimjet.com/en/dlpage.php

I run XP on a free city hall server given to me that is a P4 with 2 gig of ram on it. It was reinstalled from the recovery partition on it.

Slimjet does not make surfing the net any safer. My computer habits make it safe.
Plus my updates of clamav and any music scans done with clamav. I do not run a active bog my a$$ down av program. They are useless mostly for what they do.

System restore and erunt registry backup and oh well here is the link
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

I run as user on XP. Not as Admin. I scan regular like when I come off the net with clamav. This desktop computer is a freebie specialist computer for me that is used for only certain tasks. My main computers are Linux only. This one sits off shut off more than the others. It has a Floppy drive also and 2 dvd drives. DVDROM & DVDRW.
Card readers on the front dash.

Runs a USB wireless G also.

Specs from a older test run checking PLOP out on it.
Edit: this was all done before I did a complete re-structure and made it a XP only Desktop Computer.

From time to time I say that the average XP user takes about an hour from a cold start to using puppy. Should I increase or decrease that time? You have a few new examples.

One of the places was a public Library

#6 Post by purple_ghost »

Computer hardware was so old that folks who wanted to use the catalog - well it either hung or took forever. and then neither computer went online.

Browser works about the same whether it is Windows or Puppy Linux. Librarian was stunned about how much faster the computers worked.

I also gave it to some others. Some of the issue is that those in this community who use really old hardware, also use dial up. Linux and dial up often sometimes is difficult for a newcomer to install.

so, do not go by me. Puppy Linux is blazing fast on even really old hardware.
