With reference to editing first post, it should be limited to additions and not allow amendments unless by admin.
This will prevent alterations that make following posts sound like rubbish!

A review of a distro or a software package would be good.

Any tips and tricks you know that might assist others.

Maybe write a tutorial on something.

Oh! I know what you did there, heh. I understand, let's see how my toshiba nb505 (atom processor) handles video recording. It plays back avi, but not mp4/xvid. Also, lacking a harddisk since 2010 (lots of sectors errors) so using mostly pendrives/burned CDs.

ok, for how to videos I'd personally set up FBReader to expand book reading capability besides epdfview.

I'm interested in shortcuts navigation within jwm/rox, will get on that first.

Was checking the boards, lots of info in How to (solutions) currently checking amigo's posts on src2pkg and related tools. Mostly for February issue.

Just how is someone going to know a new news letter is out?
Go to the first post in this topic.
If the link to the new news letter is not in this first post. You will need to start reading all the posts, until you find a link to the news letter.
If you want to know how to submit to the news letter. That info needs to be in the first post, Not 4 or 5 pages into the topic.

Here is a good example of what the first post in a topic, can do, if you have control of editing it.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=101127
Notice this first post has been edited 59 times by me.
Notice the pet file is actually posted on page 29 of the topic, but the link in the first post takes you directly to it.
Notice that tips and info, that is in different posts in this topic, have all been posted in the first topic, so info that is needed is there to see. No need to look at all posts to get the info.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

There do need to be exceptions, but do you remember a certain (no longer present) person who posted contencious comments and then when people replied, deliberately changed his first post to make them look as though they were attacking him personally??

With the first post belonging to Kerl i guess the question is - will Kerl be happy to co-ordinate and highlight regular links to the newsletter over the long term, or does a new thread need to be started either by Flash, or by someone who will be around long term to keep updating the first post.

Does Flash have the ability to "transfer" control of the first post to new co-ordinators if needed?

If @kerl wouldn't mind pasting the link below into the first post of this thread, I can manage the rest of the maintenance. My intention is to add a new newsletter on the first of each month.
Puppy Linux Newsletters
The first edition is released. My work on it has come to an end.

I'm still looking for someone to provide a software or distro review or two for the February edition.

Happy New Year one and all

Hi smokey - I just tried downloading the first notecase version from your link and all I see is a blank page. Any suggestions?

@Smokey01:

Many, many thanks for a job well done!

The Puppy newsletter is useful, well-presented, easy to read and it
promotes Puppy in the best way: what more could we ask for?!

As for me, I had no problem at all downloading and reading the notecase
version or the online version.

Again, congratulations, Smokey01!

Happy New Year 2017 to you, Russooodle, all newsletter contributors, as
well as to all Puppyists!

We're off to an excellent start! Let's make 2017 a "Puppy Year"! :D

BFN.

By what method did you try downloading it?

It works fine here in Fatdog64-710 with Seamonkey.

You should be able to drag it from my website straight into a directory with Rox.

It's a real compressed file, not fake. Click on it to extract it.

You might be out of luck on that link pasted into the first post.

Having started the topic, kerl hasn't posted in it for a fortnight now.....

(*shrug*)

Start a new thread for the Newsletter issues, and just link to this one.

Ok.

Now that it's out, Smokey01, you contact the ABC about it; Mike Walsh, you
contact the BBC; and I'll contact the CBC.

We'd need an American Puppyist to get coverage from UPI. ;)

That's only partially a joke... What I mean is: now that our newsletter exists,
we need to think about distribution channels.

Any ideas, people ?!

Thanks smokey - that resolved my brainfart.

And thanks for positioning the display formatting tip on top line - that does help. I wonder if it can be improved further though so that none of the tip runs off the page. Could it be restructured maybe as two or 3 short lines (with line feed?)

Something like the following:

Code: Select all

Display tip:
To improve the Notecase display format please press F7 then:
- Tick the "Restore last position/size" checkbox.
- Select the "Display" tab and tick "Wrap text".
I reckon that way the whole tip text would all be readable on even the smallest screens.

@Rattlehead - nice ROX intro. One of the features that I use a lot may also be worth a mention - the use of the tilde/backtick key ~ to open a terminal window in the current rox window. For years I used to navigate through the main menu to get a terminal window now i just use that ~ key as the shortcut.

@musher0 - you do make some lovely transparent desktop windows. Nice

Hi all, I just read issue #1 of the newsletter, and I'm thrilled. It looks great, also the html version (the green typography over white is very easy on the eye... great job!).

I really enjoyed the story of Puppy the chihuahua, I can totally visualize it, it's a good think to know your origins... :P :P :P

Thank you Smokey01 and all the involved... I'll start thinking what to write for the next issue, maybe some distro or software review as it seem they are needed. To me it's a great weekend pastime and change of occupation, after all the things you write because you have to, to write something about Puppy just because I want :)

@greengeek,

thank you for your comments on my ROX-filer tutorial. Goodness, you're right, I forgot the open terminal shortcut; I did know it, in fact I think I forgot it because it is so second nature to me, and also because in my keyboards I always have to do some tinkering before it works (maybe because Spanish language uses accents?). Anyways, good catch. :)

I agree with Musher0 that some brainstorming on "distribution" could be perhaps desirable. Several options have been discussed, I don't really like the modify-the-first-post system, maybe it's just me but I find it a bit "smudgy". Could it be possible/interesting/practical to create a new forum thread called "Newsletter issues", with only one new post per month whenever a new issue is launched? Just an idea on the top of my head...

Thank you everybody guys, and have a great year... :)

smokey01,

An idea.
Have a link to the newsletter web page (http://www.smokey01.com/newsletters/) added at the top of the forum web page below the links to Puppy HOME page and "THE" alternative forum.

Makes it very easy to find.
No need to look for a news letter topic and you have total control of what is on that Puppy NewsLetter web page.

I am sure flash or JohnMurga would be willing to add it to the top of the forum page, if you asked and tell them what it is.

Also put a link on that Puppy Newsletter web page to information on how to contribute to the newsletter.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
