Difference between puppylinux.com and puppylinux.org?

#1 Post by peterbill »

Hi there everyone.

I have used Puppy in the past (don't ask me which version). The only problem now, is that I wanted to install puppy again and I found this site http://puppylinux.com. At first, I thought that site's theme was changed, but then I found this site http://puppylinux.org, which I ALREADY knew and remembered!

So my question is: Why are there two different sites? Are they two different projects?

Excuse me for being so silly, but I'm really confused.

Welcome back peterbill.

I don't know why there is org and com. Never gave it much thought.
Maybe they are there just to confuse you? :-)
Puppy can be quite confusing because it is almost anarchist, a do-ocracy, free, very little central organisation. A good place to be, I find. :D

Puppylinux.com is the newerofficial puppy site.

Puppylinux.org was an older, community site that really wasn't maintained. It seems to now be linked to the Puppy wiki.

puppylinux.com is allowed to make money? "com" as in "commercial", no?

puppylinux.com is now the official website controlled and maintained by the Puppy Linux stewards.
So, they used .com.
Well, Barry K had already registered the name puppylinux.com and puppylinux.org, but he turned total control of them over to the master steward 01micko.
.org would be used by the wiki.

What you use is up to you when you register the name of the website.
.com (commercial)

This extension rules every other one both in people’s minds and on the Internet. It stood for commercial websites but it’s used for all sorts of websites today.

To explain it more bluntly, choosing a .com extension is good for business because it’s easier to recall.
.org (organization)

This was intended for various organizations and nonprofit companies. It isn’t the best choice if you’re building a website for your business as it sends mixed messages.

If you’re a nonprofit organization and especially a well-known organization, use .org by all means. It adds the extra message that it’s a website for a nonprofit organization.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Oh. I thought that ".com" was limited to real businesses.

As I recall, John Murga was forced to use .com when someone else beat him to .org. I don't know if there are any rules or restrictions about using either one or who would enforce them.

Hi, Flash and all.

As you can see here, only organizations with a legal co-operative charter
can use the .coop domain name.

It seems regular businesses do not have to prove their legal entity when
registering a .com domain name. Bigpup's article leads one to think that
the user public is the final judge for appropriateness of a top domain
name.

I know that the .gov extension (used alone) is reserved for the gov't of the
USA. Federal gov't sites in Canada have the .gc.ca extension, and
provincial gov'ts have, e.g., gouv.qc.ca or gov.mb.ca, and so on.

As to enforcement, there are now national Internet authorities, e.g. CIRA,
not only the ICANN. Ultimately, the Dep't of Justice of the country. Please
see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name.

BFN.

You'd think .coop ought to be reserved for poultry farmers...

No, no, no! Not the farmers, the chickens!

The chickens in a chicken coop are organized according to the principle
"one chicken, one vote", NOT "one dollar, one vote". Chickens are
democrats ( lower-case "d"! ) instinctively.

Consumers' coops, workers' coops, etc., the same.

We're all chickens! You didn't know that, did you?

org and wiki

#11 Post by raffy »

puppylinux.org was really intended for wiki use, so it now points to

wikka.puppylinux.com

which is kindly hosted by Chief Steward Micko.

puppylinux.org will expire one year from now, and it will be Barry's decision to extend its registration under his name.

People looking for the wiki should go to wikka.puppylinux.com
