How to view Power Point files?

#1 Post by smokey01 »

I am using simpress for viewing power point files and it works fine. I am unable to click on the file from within Thunderbird though and automatically start simpress to view the file. If I save the file and drag it to the Open Office suite icon it loads fine. I have tried the Set Run Action to simpress but it does not work. It actually starts to load the open office initial screen then disappears.

I have tried to find another reader that might do the job but they have not been successful either, including tonicpoint as I have not managed to unzip or install it.

Any help would be appreciated.

I almost have the family converted from windows. Just have a couple of niggles left.

i'm currently doing a uni course where occasionally content is presented in either pdf, or powerpoint format. i hate pdf 50% less than powerpoint. IMO powerpoint should be given 240V!

anyway, regarding your query, it's to do with what are called MIME types. searching the forum, i found this post:

this is concerning getting rox to recognise mp3s, but the same principles apply to .ppt

Ajaxpresents looked good but I really want a standalone application not web based. I also noticed it's quite slow, too much like windows.

Thanks for your suggestion Artie.

Muggins I will see if I can understand the MIME Type info.
Thanks

Muggins,

Thanks for your help. With simpress I just included the full path. It apparently could not find the simpress executable. I suppose I could have also included the simpress dir in the path environment. Now when I click on a Powerpoint file attached in thunderbird all works as it should.

another thought:
maybe use an online conversion service like Zamzar to convert PowerPoint format into another like .ODS for OpenOffice.Org.

Just thought I'd add that I was doing a course where the lecturer was offering slides in .ppt format and, if you've got OpenOffice >= v2.3, there's an extension available called Sun Presentation Minimizer:

Smells like SPAM to me. A quick google of "nancykobe" shows many references to forum responses using the identical wording above and all posted in the last several days!!!!
