Noob warning Alpha builds are cutting edge
- that means unstable, require tweaking and some experience.
If they piddle on your PC . . . well eh . . . just so you know

For stable Puppy release:
26 April 2009 Warren will release 4.2.1 Deep Thought Final RC
This will incorporate all the bug fixes and patches we have for 4.2
1st May 2009 Deep Thought 4.2.1 Final released

Jaunty is typical woof.
Install (Lin'N'Win) went ok.
Did by accident a version upgrade from 461.
Not all was taken, like the mouse and rox settings.

Previous installed programs do run.

Still no scroll in the mouse, but I think Barry didn't announce that there would be one now.
The same for sfs files. Old ones incompatible with the new sfs support, but I think Barry is working on it.

Kernel is 2.6.29.1, which makes me happy for my 2nd sata drive supported in the Medion, MD8818

Looking good and for the moment nothing else to report.

OK details of my LCD workaround

The max of my monitor is 1280x1024
BUT that will not work
So I choose h31.5-90v 59-75
that is a res of 1400x1050
then I am offered a selection of resolutions
one of which is 1280x1024
This works
(I refuse to use xvesa or a lower res as a matter of principle 8) )

Hope that helps
Now after trying sound recording on pupitup, tmxxine vision and Wine using Puppy 4.2 SMP (some success)
I am trying to get sound recording working using a Jaunty attitude
and a friendly pirate hat . . .
Image

OK so far have tried downloading a variety of packages from the various Ubuntu depositories - none seem to have worked
Mostly extra libraries from what I can gather from the command line . . .
Then I installed Pupget  and this seems to have copied over the package manager with an earlier version . . .

Still no scroll in the mouse
I had a new install (not an upgrade)
This fix from Barrys blog worked for me:
Manually, edit /etc/mousedevice and change the entry "psaux" to "input/mice".

Then the scroll wheel should work, after a X restart.

Xsane scanning

#8 Post by Béèm »

Xsane recognizes my scanner, but I get error messages:

Code: Select all

Error duringCMS conversion
Could notopen scanner ICM profile
In spite of this I can scan and save B/W images, but not gray oer color ones.
Am I missing some dependency?

Wine version > 1.01via PPM

#9 Post by Béèm »

Before searching for wine I did the lenghty update of the package list.
But to my disappointment, I did not find a wine version later then 1.01
I have a program which needs =>1.1.16
Is there a way to get it via PPM?

Slight prob.

#11 Post by belfasteddie »

Hi, I have been trying out this version and have a question.
If I run it from the Cd everything is good. It is the first version that I have been able to run with Xorg. I am even able to run my screen res higher than default.(Looks much better).Wireless, sound, Firewall all Ok.
However when I do a HD install I have to go back to Xvesa. The HD install is not picking up the saved file. I get at startup:
Setup etc.rc.d/rc sysinit.
line 39 cannot create etc/rc.d/ pupstate read only file sys.( might not be quite right as I was trying to write it down, took a couple of boots. )
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Cheers,
eddie.

Hail Kernel 2.6.29 !
Great AAO netbook out of the box hardware support.
Wifi, sound, video (Gxine OK).
Installed Mplayer, and netdiscover, all went well, no dep missing, shows as installed in the packet manager, put an Mplayer entry in multimedia menu but wont run, even if I click on the binany in /usr/bin.
Posting with Woof Alpha 5, no abnormal behaviour in over 30 minutes, and 2 reboot, running from 512 MB USB stick.
I'm lovin'it !
Thanks BK !
Keep on keepin' on.
Don't poop it down... Pup it Up !

Thank you. In the meantime I found the 1.1.19 pet on the site of dokupup.
But my goal was to test PPM.

:D Hello,
@eztuxer,
You need libsdl for mplayer to run on upup..
Attached is a pet...
It installs the libs in /usr/lib..
@Edit ..D/L, save, and then install, as Petget didnt do it for me...

I have the same problem ok on live cd but not on hard drive with woof4 and 5. I have full installation of puppy 4.1 in one partition and when i try a full install of woof 4/5 into a clean partition i cannot start xorg only vesa. Also when i try to save a dpup save file my drive sounds like it is breaking up,. This is the second drive i have installed as the first one did the same and i assumed it had reached the end of its life, not so sure it was faulty now.

Upup 463 iso, live cd. Is it just me, or don't we have Samba yet? Pnethood does not find my shared folder on the XP machine, and CUPS does not give me a "Windows printer via smb" option. EDIT: Can't find smbspool, so I can't set up the traditional symlink /backend/smb to smbspool.

I could try downloading Samba client and common packages from Ubuntu Universe, but it's 35MB. Wow! That's bloat!

Upup 463, live cd.

Used Pfind. Entered filename, click on search (or was it find?) OR press <RET>, and up comes a results window titled pfilesearch 1.12.
Close that, and after a second or so, up comes another window full of results, titled Pfind 4.4.

I hope this isn't a repost. Thought I'd posted this morning, but no sign of it. Anyway, downloaded upup463 and ran it from CD, pfix=ram. Here are the results:

Clock reads things like 08:45 PM. If we are going to use civil time it should be 8:45 PM, or military time 20:45.

No menu icons

Leafpad shifted to left in menu

"Menu" not centered in tray button

No Seamonkey mail/news. Sylpheed is there, but I hope you plan to use the integrated Seamonkey suite in final

No scroll wheel support

Podcast grabber doesn't work. And can't kill it even with the kill option

Pmusic close button doesn't end music.

PupTV should give a message if either the video or audio is missing from the selected channel. Also starts in full screen mode with no controls. Would prefer windowed start with full controls

Huge delay with choosing locale between selecting it and when the popup occurs

CUPS 1.3.9 still doesn't offer the option of installing a USB printer unless one is actually connected. We could do that in Puppy 4.0, and I liked that much better

Pupscan takes a very long time to com up

Why no V4L2, instant messaging, webcam program?

Ifind pops up a listing of all the found files labeled pfilesearch 1.12. When you close it, pfind creates the normal hit list labeled Pfind 4.4

Xsane should give a message when no scanner is connected instead of just disappearing

Ptimer/stop watch should default to no count down, no auto start, and tenths present. Now have to select count down to get tenths

Xvesa "change" button does change, but also closes Xvesa wizard instead of leaving it open to accept change or make more like it used to

Switching from Xorg to Xvesa results in 800x600 display no matter what was previously selected in Xorg

Xrandr magnifies screen. If I am running in, say, 1280x1024 and then "xrandr -s 1024x768" what I get is the first 1024x768 pixels of the 1280x1024 covering the whole display with the remaining pixels off screen to the right and bottom. This was same in Puppy 4/4.2

On the plus side Alsa quickly found and configured my built-in sound card. Avi, mov, and mpg movies played well. The speed seems faster than 4.2 on either booting or application start.

I did not have time to try downloading jaunty apps, but pet manager worked well with pets.

I think it is coming along wonderfully!

Edit: absvolume in tray doesn't work, but volume controls on individual apps do. Try from terminal and get "Error opening mixer device"

Fotox index labels almost unreadable

Tried downloading Atomix from jaunty. Downloaded and installed OK, but menu not updated (not added to .jwmrc)

System is Celeron 2.53 GHz, 514 MB, Radeon 9200 SE, VIA8237, ATA WDC WD800BB-OOJH, Logitech PS/2 Wheel Mouse, HP 1940 1280x1024 display

Same results after frugal install to ata hd

Manual frugal install to an CF card in IDE adapter.
Compaq Armada 3500 - 300mhz 192mb
CT 69000 graphics
I used the 'zdrive' version.

Xorg does not work for me (I have used it successfully on this laptop with other Puppies), but Xvesa was ok.

Pmount identitifes some drives, but will not mount them (program closes.)
[edit] Xvesa boots to 800x600 and the drive icons for the 3 partitions on the CF disc are on the desktop. They can all be mounted and opened. Once I change to 1024x768, the icons disappear. Pmount shows they exist, but clicking on 'mount' causes the programme to close.

'Poweroff', 'Reboot', and 'Exit to prompt' do the same as Restart X server.
[edit] ctrl+alt+backspace, and ctrl+alt+delete also restart X server.

Looked in Top, and absvolume is running, but nothing displayed on tasbar (it uses 7% of memory, as does blinky, which seems a bit on the greedy side).
Can't get sound anyway, which I expected, as only have achieved this with Breezy and Grafpup.

Runs very nicely on a Dell 610 laptop (1.7g, 512mb RAM, run from USB stick- frugal install), but can't get Wireless to work. Same problem with the Armada - won't establish a WPA connection.

:D Well, well, well...a `Butu Pup...I hate `Butu...
But I love this Pup...
I have had NO problems yet...
Xorg worked fine...
Used Package Manager to Install Tux Paint from `Butu repo...
Worked perfectly, resolved dep`s and then resolved their dep`s...
Its a keeper, even if it has `Butu under the hood...
Installed Firefox, Opera, ect...All worked fine..
Also scrollwheel works fine too..

My system specs...
P4 intel 1.8ghz...w/ 768mb ram..ATI mobility 7500 Laptop, LCD Screen at 1024x768, manual frugal install, reboots fine, all saves intact...

Tried to build an SPup with Woof A4... Too many "not downloaded" packages to build, (Rox and glibc for example)..
Retried download multiple times, same result, different missing packages, as the "build a single package" did nothing, so full build each time, and failed...

IDK, but I like Slackware packages, so I`ll try SPup from someone else, Big Bass I think is doing one......
Close the Windows, and open your eyes, to a whole new world
