Root Forever, and Double Click Never...

#1 Post by puppyluvr »

:D Hello,
Why are we Puppies??

"I am a Puppy", because:
I hate to double click.
I hate to be asked "Are you sure"
I REFUSE to "su" or "sudo"
I am NOT a 'guest' on my own computer...
I want my computer to OBEY me, not Microshaft or Canonical or Apple etc....
As I teach my Puppy, my Puppy teaches me... Try that with M$...
I want the best of whatever is available, regardless of Distro or Arch...
I want to use whatever scrap computer I can aquire, and outrun my friends new 2ghz 4gb ram Win7 machines with a P3 900mhz 512 mb Ram Win XP machine!!!
I love to dig into the "guts" of my OS, and Puppy is as easy to "gut" as a fish, while some are elephants...

I want to hear: "You use WHAT??" 8)

Windows!
KIDDING
I think I taught a lesson to a few people who didn't believe I could use a computer without a hard drive or play Plants vs. Zombies on Puppy Linux through Wine. Even if I couldn't play any games (formerly none at all), I like Puppy Linux very much -- super fast, full of tools, tiny yet with all codecs, no antivirus needed, I don't feel like buying a hard drive (or the latest HP all-in-one) yet. Even a friend of mine who uses Trisquel is amazed at the speed of Puppy Linux. Moreover, for a long time Puppy and Linux in general were unknown here (they still think Linux is in English only), so I felt like visiting Macondo and telling other people that the Puppy sorcerers made my computer work hyper fast and without hard drive.

vicmz, how do you use Puppy? From a USB flash drive, multisession CD or DVD, or what?

I have a 17" iMac (Intel), 2GhZ core2duo, 1GB RAM, about 2004/5 vintage....

Finally got around to copying off what data i wanted to keep recently, then reformatted the 160GB drive for Linux. Now i have several frugal Puppy installs in residence and i'm happy as a piggy-pup in mud!

Haha I am not sure I should tell why I am using puppy.
It would give those interested in Puppy the wrong impression.

Promise to not tell anybody else. Secret. I fail to do Double Click
as fast as they have set it. And I fail to follow instructions how to
set it slower. Okay there are cheating ways. One can right click
ones and use the rolled down menu and say open :)

Another reason are the need to remember user names and passwords.

I constantly forget the user name I have on Windows and what password
I have. so being root on puppy suits me good.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Currently both Wary as LiveDVD+sessionfile@USB, and Precise Puppy as frugal install to flash drive. Now that you mention multisession DVD, I've never tried, maybe I give it a go -- after I get some DVDs from the neighbouring country. I had to learn how to make a frugal install because this week I bought six DVDs in total and none of them worked! I tried the DVDs on a computer with Windows and they weren't detected properly either. Then I found that they were made in my country, which is currently under a law that restricts imported goods, that would be fine if local goods had the same quality. I have to cross the border to buy branded DVDs that do work. Anyway, I used AFI (by RSH) to make the frugal install, but I had to copy the grldr from a Puppy CD that had one, and then run Grub4Dos, to get a working boot loader installed. Every time I boot from my frugal install I have to press F11 and select the USB drive where it is installed, I guess because there's no hard drive with boot loader? I left my Wary DVD inserted in case I forget to select the frugal install. Never mind, Precise works like a Ferrari!

:D Hello,
@Nooby, I`m right there with ya man..
I cant remember to double-click, I hate passwords, and I have to be root..
So I HAVE to use Puppy...
On CD, USB, and HDD, Puppy is the one for me..
OK, so maybe having 27 frugal Pups on 1 of my laptops might mean I have a problem..
"Ya think"...

:D Hello,
It took exactly 41 days from discovering Linux, to joining this forum...
In 41 days, I tried (in order) Knoppix, PCLinuxOS, DSL, and finally, Puppy...
The rest is, as they say, history. 8)
5 years ago, Linux was unknown to me.
I was well versed in computers, and already hated windows.
I could program in basic, and knew dos back to front..
But the Linux cli was a mystery...
In almost 5 years of Puppy training, I can now do whatever... and am learning more daily.
This forum is responsible..
Puppy is just a bunch of code..
This forum is what makes it so much more..

So, again I say:
All Hail John Murga, and every single member of his forum..
Separately, we are just a bunch of Linux users.
Together, We ARE Puppy...
Resistance is Futile...

Fabulous!

That should be stuck at the top of the Forum front page.

I'll take the beauty of Puppy WITH the added benefit of non-root user. It's not like always running in root is some kind of enviable linux status. If that's your choice, go for it.

I would not mind being non-root either if I managed to do it.

FadDog make use of user Spot for doing Browser things.
That may be a good compromise?

So jpeps are you referring to a puppy where you use spot or fido
or what do you refer to as non-root? Have you done your own variation?

Hope it is okay to ask such in this thread?

Only if you type "su" first, to elevate yourself to root privileges...

I'd hate to get into yet another discussion of linux basics, ie.. how to use permissions or why they're used.

Yes sorry, sad fact is that some of us totally fail on such things.
Too many details to keep in head too many special words
and the in what order to consider them.

Don't Worry! Be happy you don't have our problems. :)

Hey, some of us do use double-click with Puppy. For me, it's not out of any ingrained Windows habit or preference... but the fact that I sometimes accidentally click on either the left or right mouse buttons, and don't want to inadvertently start something.

Hear, hear! It's a good guard against fat fingers! (I tend to remove all the pinboard icons except for the partition icons, so there I do keep it at single-click, but ROX-Filer is always set to double-click.)

I have to concur with puppyluvr's apparent opinion of "Are you sure?" sorts of prompts. That and the constant little popups, 'friendly' reminders and nagging is what first drove me off Windows and later off of Ubuntu. The pup is very loyal and obedient, and only barks a little bit the first time it meets you. :P

personally I would prefer the double-click.

Always being root is a horrible sight, I love having separate users so my settings aren't other peoples' knowledge.

It's interesting that nobody seems to be complaining that they don't have root privileges on their android devices. Savvy users can root them. On Puppy, it's the opposite; the most casual user overrides the permissions by default...for themselves and anyone else who gains access.
