What makes a desktop GUI "look good"?

It seems that people prefer the more resource-hungry desktop managers like KDE and GNOME because they "look good" and deride lighter weight GUIs as too spartan. Then there are others who disagree and refer to KDE and GNOME as "eye candy". What's the big deal about desktop GUIs? I...

Creating shortcuts to folders

Is there a way I can create such shortcuts on the desktop? I want easy access to the internal CD-ROM, external CD burner, floppy drive, data files, etc.

Recommended Linux books

What Linux books do you recommend? I have _Linux For Non-Geeks_, but it's specific to Fedora Core. Given that there aren't any Puppy Linux books available and the fact that I may want to try other distributions in the future (though probably not right away), I'm looking for a good reference book tha...

Try cdrecord -scanbus command line command, and see if your burner shows up. If it does use the bus, target and lun as displayed. Then use the commands above to record the ISO. The speed= is variable of course. Please report results, be they negative or positive, okay? I entered the command "c...

2.14: no burning program recognizes USB CD burner?

I have Puppy Linux version 2.14 installed to my hard drive. How do I burn an ISO file to CD? For that matter, how do I burn anything to CD? MUT does not recognize my CD burner. PMount recognizes my CD burner. Puppy CD/DVD drive Wizard recognizes my CD burner. The Burniso2CD only recognizes my read-o...

Finally got version 2.14 working

Version 2.14 finally works for me. For some odd reason, Damn Small Linux on CD-RW works but Puppy Linux requires CD-R. Now I know that the problem all along was my CDs and NOT Puppy Linux. I like the display of the available RAM. If Windows had such a display, I'd be able to avert the freeze-ups bet...

How should I partition my hd before installing Puppy?

I'm trying to install Puppy Linux 1.0.8 on my hard drive. I have a completely free hard drive, because I bought this cheap used desktop computer specifically for trying out Linux. I don't plan to dual boot. Oh, and I plan to upgrade to a newer version of Puppy Linux eventually anyway, and the few fi...

How do I wipe Fedora Core 1 off my hard drive?

I'd like to install Puppy Linux to my desktop PC, the one that currently has Fedora Core 1. How do I get rid of Fedora Core 1? I need to avoid making the same mistake I made the last time I tried to get rid of it. I earlier used Damn Small Linux to delete the hard drive partitions and install DSL to...

Also like the setup item

I like the easy access to the setup for various components. In fact, the Internet access didn't work the first time I opened the browser, but a quick trip to the Setup item in the menu to configure the DSL modem fixed that.

Even in version 1.0.8, you can do a lot even without reading the manual.

Puppy Linux finally works for me!

I finally got Puppy Linux working. OK, it's version 1.0.8. I wasn't able to get versions 2.14, 2.11, or 2.10 working for me, so I downloaded 1.0.8. Although I did get Damn Small Linux 3.2 to work, I couldn't bring myself to completely abandon Puppy Linux, because all of you are so enthusiastic about...

Why can't I just download prior versions of Puppy?

Puppy 2.14 wasn't working out for me, so I decided to try older versions of Puppy Linux. But I couldn't download a copy the usual way. So I had to download a BitTorrent client and use that to download an older version of Puppy Linux. So I downloaded Azureus. But now Azureus refuses to run. I get a m...

Which BitTorrent client should I get?

I need to download earlier versions of Puppy Linux, because version 2.14 isn't working for me. But only the latest version is available for downloading, so I have to use BitTorrent. But I need a BitTorrent client. I have no idea which one to get, though I think it's a safe bet to avoid the ones gear...

Where can I find an earlier version of Puppy?

My Puppy Linux CD booted on another computer (a 1-year-old Dell laptop), but it didn't install properly. Several people on a newsgroup reported having difficulty with 2.14 but smooth sailing on 2.10 or 2.11.

I'd like to try 2.11 and 2.10. Where can I find older versions of Puppy Linux?

How do I PROPERLY read that *.tgz user's manual?

I was able to read some of it with Emacs, but I saw HTML tags and lots of gibberish.

What application should I be using to read this?

I downloaded Smart Boot Manager

The computer refused to boot this as well! When I restarted the computer with the floppy disk in place, I got the infamous "Nonsystem error, please remove disk and press any key" error.

Now what do I do?

More details

I currently have Linux Fedora Core 1 installed on the hard drive. So far, the computer has refused to do anything but boot from the hard drive, which takes me into Fedora Core 1.

How do I get the computer to allow me to boot from the Puppy Linux CD instead?

Computer refuses to boot from CD

I was able to get into the System Configuration menus by pressing F1 at startup. However, I didn't see any option for changing the boot order even though I did see all the other usual options (like setting the disk drive to 3.5" or 5.25", setting the system date and time, etc.). Why does m...
