It's all in the pinstall.sh files. The pet pinstall edits firmware.dep.2.6.33.2 to add entries for 2 orinoco "all-firmware" directory/tarballs, which contain pinstalls to rename the .HIDE module files to .ko for the appropriate version of orinoco.ko.

Lucid Pup 5.2.8.7 for 2015 Uploaded - 20150520 (Partially)

#362 Post by rerwin »

I have begun the process of updating the 2015 version of Lucid Pup 5.2.8.7 and removing the betas. The lupu (k2.6.33.2) set and lupusuper2 are in place. The remaining "supers" and "3HD" will be built and uploaded soon.

Here is the link to the 5.2.8.7 ISO-file directory -- please use only the files dated with 20150520:

https://www.mediafire.com/folder/y3rkzh ... es-5.2.8.7

The changes since the 20141203 version are documented in these postings:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 108#726108 Near the end
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 961#845961

Update 5/23/2015: More uploaded - lupu3hd, lupusuper2libre and lupusuper2plus.

Update 5/31/2015: Completed upload of the 20150520 set of ISO files. However, I plan to replace that set soon with another that adds recent upgrades and fixes to:
  • dillo
    geany
    network_tray
    pburn
    mtpaint

I downloaded lupusuper2-5.2.8.7-k3.2.48-20150520.iso , extracted the sfs, initrd, and vmlinuz to a new directory.
Boots fine, thank you.

What's a simple way to use the settings etc in my old superlupu2 save file ?

Thanks again,
Sheldon

Thanks for your report. The absence of other reports is unnerving, in that I don't know whether that means all is well or that nobody cares.

My intent for the update technique is that your old save file should "just work" with the newer versions of 5.2.8.6/7 -- in frugal installations -- since the main file (lupu_528.sfs) is below the pupsave in the layering hierarchy.

But for full installs, the answer is murky. Which case are you referring to?

And thank you, Richard, for your quick response. I see you're in the same time zone.

It's a frugal install.

Probably I should've said the old savefile was actually a save directory; I had used mavrothal's (?) Luci_SaveDir-6.pet

EDIT: I deleted everything, extracted anew from the iso, and rebooted (making a fresh savedir).
It works.
Changed to jwm.
Does not work; ie, xwin doesn't load a GUI.
xorgwizard does not help.
Editing /etc/windowmanager to openbox restores the ability to load a GUI

Thanks.

It works.
That's the good news. But the old savedir should have worked, as well. "Frugal" just means that the layered file system is involved, regardless of whether the save entity is a 2fs/3fs/4fs file or a directory.

Now, that is a very important issue to report. Thank you.

One of the new packages is an updated version of JWM, which is probably related to what you are seeing. Give me a little while to check that out in my test PC, so I can look for clues.

An hour later:
I found the solution! A library file is newly needed. But that has been addressed long ago by Barry, who has provided the file for precise and slacko here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/pet_pa ... ckware.pet

For reference, his blog entry is here:
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=03036

For now, users of JWM can install that pet in any of the lupu variants. I will include it next time I rebuild the ISO files. I have verified that it works in lupumini and lupusuper2.

Many thanks, Richard.

It now works fine, with JWM and the savedir from the earlier lupusuper2.

Give it some time for people to see there is something new.
I just noticed it today 5/24/2015.

Puppy forum time is in days not hours or minutes.

Thanks!!!!!

Lupusuper4 Upgrade

#370 Post by Hotdog »

I wiped my lupusuper4-5.2.8.7-k3.9.9-20141203 full install and replaced it with lupusuper4-5.2.8.7-k3.9.9-20150520 and reinstalled my addons. Everything is working fine on a Penium4 at 2.4GHz, 1GB of memory and a 30 GB harddrive.

This is our sole OS on this machine and our laptop. Actually haven't upgraded the laptop yet but the live CD of lupusuper4-5.2.8.7-k3.9.9-20150520 worked as expected.

I am very appreciative of your work in keeping this excellent OS viable and current.

Something I noticed while running the lupusuper2plus of 20141203.

I was using the default browser Dillo and searching the web. The search engine is set to DuckDuckGo and when I hit the go button it gets an error message.

DuckDuckGo is an https address and Dillo is not configured for https. Instructions are given on compiling Dillo with an ssl parameter but this is beyond me.

As more and more sites move to https it would be nice to get Dillo working with them.

Dillo ssl may need you to add a certificates pack to make it happy...I just disabled the warnings in a build for older pups...might be worth a try.

You need to use a more featured browser.

Dillo is in Lucid to provide basic ability to access .html help files, when you first boot Lucid.
The main help file is .html.

It is not a complete full featured browser.

A full featured browser is not installed in Lucid.
That is why you are offered to install a browser, when you first click on the browse icon on the desktop.
The idea was to give you a choice to have the full featured browser you wanted to use.

Thanks guys. I know all about the browser situation with this pup.

However, Dillo is nice for those of us who do not want a full featured browser all of the time. I also use OffByOne with Wine in another pup. This suffers from the same problem with regard to https but with OffByOne there is nothing that can be done about it.

Just thought I would mention the problem just in case someone was interested in keeping Dillo working as a browser.

Pending re-issue of 5.2.8.7 ISO files

#376 Post by rerwin »

I have been making some fixes and discovering newly available upgrades to add to the set of lupus. I attended to the issues of dillo and network_tray mentioned here and elsewhere. I found upgrades for geany, pburn and mtpaint. I do not want to release lupu for the next period without those improvements, so will be building another set of ISO files soon.

The task of adding the updated dillo revealed two problems related to the petget_rewrite package, now resolved.

If there are any further things I should consider adding, please speak up.

Is there any reason that I should not upgrade geany to the 1.23 version, which has recently been made available by s243a and toowoombalinux in another thread?

What version of 5.2.8.7?

#377 Post by Snail »

What version of Lucid 5.2.8.7 would best suit my oldish desktop? Hardinfo reports 1G of RAM memory, it doesn't say what type, and shows two 2800MHz Pentium 4 processors (With pae). Not sure of the age, it's second-hand but it had Windows XP on it, possibly 2004?

I have been running 3HD. However, I understood from Playdayz that the only difference between 3HD and "standard" Lucid was a newer kernel. Since there are now multiple kernels available for Lucid ---7 and some are more up-to-date than that in 3HD, does the 3HD designation still mean anything?

Thank you rerwin for keeping this most user-friendly Puppy marching on.

Snail,

With that computer hardware any version would probably work OK.

That is basically what I have.

3HD did seem to give the best support, at the time it was offered, but that was before Lupusuper versions were developed.

Now It is suggested, the best option is to use one of the lupusuper versions, if your hardware is not really old.

Not trying to suggest you stop using Lucid, it is too good a version of Puppy!!!!!

However, that computer should be able to handle the newest Puppy versions.
Tahrpup 6.0.3
Slacko 5.7
Precise 5.7.1
Etc.....

Lupusuper ROCKS!... Thanks Rerwin (and everyone else helping maintain it! I really like the breadth of Debian compatibility)

As for "too old"... The super runs on my Dell Latitude C640 (circa 2002)... That's pretty darn old for a laptop... I would recommend that folks try this first, before digging back into the older retros and whatnot...

LupuMini runs on my Compaq Armada (I bought it old and used in 2001 -- Win98 laptop)... I doubt that many are trying to run much that is older than that... In the 4.x family, it needed Retro versions...
