okay - useful feedback! thanks. I have to admit - the reason I'm using Puppy is that 1) it installed easily (sort of) on a usb stick (nice to play with without mesing up my working Vista PC), and 2) I could actually get Broadcom wifi working (which defeated all other distros I tried). So i was sort ...

I haven't used anything other than the basic puppy 3.01 installation. I installed VLC and a battery monitor because they were pup packages which I just about understand (installation wise). The point I'm making is that Vista works 99% automatically in doing the basic operations that users want. As a...

Gxine in 3.01 = disappointing multimedia
I recently compared streaming performance in Puppy L:nux and Vista using Seamonkey (PL) and Opera (Vista). The url was:- http://www.streamick.com and tried a number of their links. Seamonkey called up xine, and Opera used MS media plugin. Qualitatively, I'm afraid Opera in Vista beats Seamonkey hand...

Well, of course, they (developers) can do whatever they want ... but research the etymology and mythology of 'chaos', and one of the key elements is that '... out of chaos, came order'. is it really such a radical suggestion? At the very least, it would give new users a fair indication of what they ...

Confusing distro numbers - why?
I recently installed 3.01. Worked well (apart from the wifi internet) Then I came across PizzaPup 3.0. New install ... which failed to recognise my wifi mouse - essentially the installation was useless. I then discovered Pizza is based on Puppy 2.0 series. My beef - why can't the distros have some c...

Right! I tried the install OpenGL - screen feedback said such and such OpenGL files already existed and did I want to replace. I assumed that meant OpenGL is already installed. So I tried the test 3D graphics option. Nothing happened! So, essentially I'm lost about what to do. The flightgear package...

What worked for me
Okay - it's crazy but I had similar problems trying to get puppy on a usb stick from the live-CD ... so in desperation I used VMware player (in Windows) to set up a virtual puppy. I then used the universal installer to install onto the usb stick. Worked flawlessly. the only thing I had to do in VMwa...

Why oh Why?
Using Puppy 3.01 .... I've dloaded the pet package 3 times now - each time I try to install I get a message saying that it needs so many zillion blocks and I have less than this. I have increased the personal storage file twice so far - I think the last was 250mb. It still comes back with the blocks...

I have Xorg installed. Do I install Mu's 3DCC via pup management utilty (can't remember the correct name)?

How to install Flightgear flight simulator in 3.01?
Can anyone help me - I would like to install Flightgear in 3.01. Here's the advice from the Flightgear page: If you have X working on your system, and your hardware supports OpenGL then installing these 2 packages should be all that's required to get you flying - just start fgrun under X. FG is a sl...

It's gotta be easier than this!
Great set of instructions until the section about: next question is: .configure system-wide symbolic links? [Y/n], this failed on me, so I made my own link at /usr/bin, by hand. Guys, linux has got to be easier than this for newbies (used to windows just installing all these plugins for browsers wit...

I tried to find the example .conf files for wpa_supplicant but they weren't anywhere (referred to in the wpa readme). I just kept looking at the error output I got and tried changing things (including single quotes, spaces, etc.). Trial and error did it, I'm afraid. The ssid is only 4 characters and...

Okay - solved the problem. I loaded ndiswrapper inf file. Then used wpa_supplicant for WPA but I hadn't put the essid in full quotation marks! That's was the problem. Took me ages to 'see' what I'd missed! How I love those command lines! Have actually now managed to install a small program to show l...

I used wpa_passphrase to get the hex version. The key is exactly 8 digits alpha. Worked fine before. The problem as far as I can see is that wpa_supplicant can't 'see' the essid. Previously it worked like a charm. But that was after I managed network wizard to actually see the network. It wouldn't c...

HELP! What next
Against my better judgement (!) I dloaded the slackware Opera. Unzipped it and now I'm totally lost about what to do next! I can't see anything remotely resembling an install file. Even then I still haven't a clue what to do if it exists. Help me! (I installed a pup called Gslapt (but that doesn't w...
